Debate

Is Taylor Swift's influence in politics overshadowing serious debates? What does this say about our society?

There’s a certain shift in public support in the lead-up to the US presidential elections! At least that’s what veteran NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith believes. Well, the 56-year-old analyst didn’t make this opinion, scaling the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. But, after the piping hot take from the pop sensation, Taylor Swift. Above all, the NBA analyst also predicted the ballot count that could hurt the Republican candidate.

Over the last few months, opinions have been thrown around regarding the November election. Not long ago, it was Trump, who seemed like leading the race, especially after Joe Biden’s poor performance in the June debate. Following that Kamala Harris has come forward and the duo finally came together for the first time, tipping off the second debate.

The body language experts and political pundits seemed to have given their nod to Kamala Harris, as she surprised Trump with a handshake before the debate. However, let’s not dive more into who won the debate, but focus on why Stephen A. Smith felt Taylor Swift turned the tide against Trump. Almost immediately after, Taylor took her stance, endorsing Kamala Harris, Smith came with a take in his trademark style.

Smith began his X post, giving his flowers to the pop star for perfectly timing her social media post, saying, Talk about gaining momentum. ⁦@taylorswift13⁩ timed this perfectly.” Then he focussed on the damage that Swift would cause, saying, “Nearly 2 million likes in 21 min. If ⁦@DonaldTrump wasn’t in trouble, he sure is now.” Moreover, the impact has currently doubled, as the total likes is about 5 million after three hours.

Above all, Smith went a step further and offered valuable advice to Trump, saying, ” He should certainly want a 2nd debate.” Well, technically, a third debate.

Have an interesting take?

Celebrities certainly have a role in influencing the public, but it doesn’t make a landslide impact. But, in the case of Taylor Swift, who has a combined social media followers two times more than the total voting population of the US. So, her stance will significantly impact the elections. Ahead of the DNC night, many expected the singer to pick her side on the race, but it remained a suspense. However, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry made it loud and clear.

Weeks later, Swift put out an IG post, holding her cat, with a long caption, right after the debate. The long caption can be divided into three segments. Firstly, she urged everyone to do their research before casting their votes. And, on the other hand, she called out the fake AI that impersonated her in supporting Trump and finally, endorsed Kamala Harris.

In an attempt to combat information, Swift wrote, “The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.” And proceeded to support Harris, as she wrote, “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes, I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
