With the nature of the game changing with every passing season, the franchises have begun looking for coaches with fresh strategies. Over the last few seasons, the NBA world has witnessed many new young coaches joining the teams. Notably, the league has 5 coaches, who are younger than LeBron James. Amid this situation, a few teams still seemed to have vested their trust in the veterans, like Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr. In the lineup, the Milwaukee Bucks put their money on Doc Rivers.

After a thirteen-year-long stint as an NBA player, representing the Atlanta Hawks for the longest, Rivers ended his career in 1996. While he hasn’t had much impact on the court as a player, he made the hoops community turn back at him with a coaching clipboard in his hand. In this article, let’s take a look at the fortune that Rivers made out of his coaching career.

What is the net worth of Doc Rivers? Exploring his long career, both as a player and a coach

Currently, Doc Rivers is the third richest NBA coach behind Jason Kidd and Steve Kerr with a total net worth of $60 million. Undoubtedly, the 63-year-old vet has a long career both as a player and coach to make up his net worth. He started off his NBA career playing for the Hawks, where he spent 8 seasons, and played the rest of his career for the Knicks, Clippers, and Spurs. During this period, Rivers made a total career of $16.7 million.

Even though the All-Star made a fortune as a player, the point guard’s real deal came during his coaching stint. The star coach picked up the drawing board in 1999, representing the Orlando Magic. In the original contract, Rivers made up to $8 million and after a two-year extension, the star coach cashed out $10 million. During his stint with the Florida side, the coach finished with a record of 171-168, taking the team to the playoff thrice and losing it in the first round all three times.

Following that, Rivers picked up the coaching role for the Boston Celtics. This was his longest coaching stint yet, spanning from 2005 to 2013. Moreover, it was Rivers’ most successful stint as well. He took Kevin Garnett and his men to the Finals twice and won a title in 2008, defeating Kobe Bryant’s Lakers. After the end of his time with the C’s, the coach checked out with a whooping salary of $35 million that included a 5-year extension.

After that, Rivers joined the Clippers in 2014, during the franchise’s most turbulent times. Speaking of his experience in LA, he said, “In my first year with the Clippers, I said, ‘Uh-oh, I may have made a mistake, but, you know, one thing I’ve never done is I never look back. I just don’t. I’ve never done that.” During his 5-year-long stint, Doc made $50 million and took the team to post-season all editions except for the 2017-18 season.

Following that, the star coach had a brief three-season stint with the Philadelphia 76ers, taking James Harden and Joel Embiid to playoffs in all three seasons. He signed a hefty deal of $40 million for 5 years in 2020. However, after three seasons, the team replaced him with Nick Nurse.

After his exit from the Sixers fold, Doc Rivers stayed off the coaching job for a while until the Bucks hired him mid-season. The star coach signed a $40 million contract for four seasons. While he had a successful record with every franchise he coached, Rivers didn’t seem to have a successful run with Wisconsin.

Currently, with 14 games into the 2024-25 season, Rivers has a disappointing losing record of 5-9. Moreover, including the previous season, he has a 24-29 record. Nevertheless, with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard by his side, the tide can change in his favor at any time.
