Why do Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum still face disrespect despite their undeniable success?

Remember the hailstorm of criticism after Jaylen Brown signed the $304 million contract? How has that turned out? Or you’ve surely seen the running meme about Brown’s left hand? That’s just the tip of the iceberg of the disrespect JB gets. His teammate, Jayson Tatum isn’t far behind when it comes to being the favorite target of critics. All-Star, NBA champion, Sports Illustrated cover star, NBA 2K cover player, and the list goes on for the 26-year-old’s catalog of success. But the disrespect? Ever present!

Recently, Jaylen Brown went public with his statement on an episode of the YouTube Show, Hot Ones. “Some of the narratives kind of float, and I allow them to float. Going forward, I look forward to clearing up some misconceptions,” JB said, responding to the question about the negative narrative surrounding him. But that doesn’t guarantee a lockdown from a barrage of crude comments. But does it matter now? No is Dan Greenberg’s answer.

The Barstool Sports Insider appeared on Celtics Beat to discuss the much-talked-about duo of the Eastern Conference, Tatum and Brown, and the disrespect they still receive. Greenberg believes that “Tatum could have another All-NBA season. He could be more efficient. He’s still not gonna move up in the MVP list. He’s gonna be in that 4 to 6 range.”

The combo forward did have a brilliant 2023-24 regular season performance. However, his 26.9 points per night, 4.9 assists and 8.1 rebounds, didn’t help his MVP case much. The other contenders, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander were way ahead of him.

“Jaylen Brown could have another insane year. It wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t make All-NBA again because that’s just what happens,” claimed Greenberg. Brown’s snub from the All-NBA team came as a shock to many, especially the Cs. But his ECF MVP and Finals MVP hopefully compensated for it. The only silver lining amid all this, the Insider feels, is that they bagged the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

“They could have 10 times better seasons. And I think you’re still gonna hear the same bullshit around both of them and lack of respect nationally with Team USA,” Greenberg added. According to him, the NBA community is biased towards them. He believes that Brown and JT face more criticism for their loss in the 2022 Finals than they get recognized for their championship victory. He concludes by saying, “That’s just their reality.”

Jaylen Brown ignores talks about his pairing with Jayson Tatum

Yes, you read that right. Jaylen Brown seems to be done talking about his closest teammate. At least that’s what it appeared like in a recent interview. Following their first preseason game against the Nuggets, Brown was asked in the press conference about being a part of one of the elite duos in the NBA.

Addressing the media’s question, Brown highlighted that the game is played five-on-five and not in pairs. “We need all of our teammates out there to contribute to help us be who they are. I think we’ve been able to accomplish a lot, but having great teammates as well has been able to help increase. The sport is played five-on-five,” the swingman further added. “I know we like to highlight duos or individuals for their play, but I like to be a part of the team and uplift the team because that helps me be who I am.”

Brown is probably done with the criticism that they have received since being integral members of the Celtics. There were doubts about their capabilities of winning it big, which they have now dispelled. But as Greenberg claimed, the narratives would still continue. Wonder how to put a stop to that! A repeat maybe?
