As the Canadian Olympics men’s basketball team is getting prepped up for its match against Greece on July 28 for their first matchup in group games in Paris, team star and Houston Rockets small forward Dillon Brooks sneaked in to interact with the media for a bit of fun. However, the press assertively asked him to choose one of the favorites between the rap music giants Drake and Kendrick Lamar. It’s well spread how the Drake-Lamar beef has affected the NBA and the basketball world on different occasions, whether it be Curry or LeBron. But this time, the 28-year-old Canadian slipped in through humorously to avoid any bias.
When a media person asked Dillon, who is currently at the Canadian training camp in Paris, about his choice between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, Brooks gave it a thought for a smart reply and then immediately replied, “I say the Villain.“
It did humor the reporter since the official FIBA page posted a posing image of Dillon Brooks after the Rockets’ small forward’s reply. It impressed the media world how acutely Brooks escaped away from the controversy as they posted the snippet with the caption on X, “The Villain has his own way.😈.” The demonic emoji depicted Dillon Brooks’ self-promoted nickname, “Dillon the Villain.”

Apparently, every prominent entity from the sports world was asked to tell their choice from Kendrick Lamar and Drake since their beef started in March. Even though the Canadian basketball player could have gone for Drake, considering he is the compatriot of the Houston Rockets small forward, he never did. Rather, Brooks’ response was out of the blue, leaving the NBA community stunned.

But, Brooks not choosing Drake was not something unexpected since he ditched him in August last year as well during the FIBA World Cup 2023 interview.
Drake was never the first choice for Dillon Brooks

Some of the NBA community can assume Drake is the first choice for most Canadians since he’s a worldwide sensation for his music. However, Dillon Brooks thinks otherwise. Last year, while the Canadian team was practicing at the training camp for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, a reporter asked the national team about their favorite Canadian in between Drake and Ryan Reynolds[Deadpool]. Expectedly, all the Canadian athletes, including Andrew Wiggins, Trey Lyles, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dwight Powell, and Mychal Mulder, chose Drake.

However, the Rockets athlete Dillon Brooks uttered Ryan Reynolds’ name in one go rather than the popular choice, Drake, among his teammates. Even FIBA’s X page was left perplexed by Brooks’ reply as they captioned the snippet, “Guess who’s got your back @Ryanreynolds😉”. In the end, 13 votes went to Drake, while the last one chose Ryan Reynolds.
With what Dillon Brooks has demonstrated whenever he is asked about the Canadian music sensation, it seems like the 28-year-old likes to keep his distance from any type of controversy, even if he has an emotional connection with it. Since Drake stays in the limelight for one or the other reason, it mostly stems from a controversial statement or activity. So, that might explain why Brooks is so hostile towards such questions.
