Stephen Curry vs. Donald Trump: Is Curry's alleged comment justified or out of line?

Anyone who tuned in to watch the first ever Presidential Debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris expected fireworks to certainly take place. However, not everyone would have assumed that the most trending statement to come out of the hour-and-a-half discussion would be “They’re eating the dogs. The people that came in. They’re eating the cats.” This was a reference to claims, that have been proven false, that immigrants in the state of Ohio were allegedly abducting pets of residents and consuming them. With border security being one of Trump’s main platforms, the former president made heads turn through his remarks that made Kamala Harris stare at him in disbelief. However, did it also catch the attention of Stephen Curry?

Two days after the debate concluded, a viral statement started to make the rounds of the internet. Uploaded by an X handle named ‘Captain Obvious’, it claimed that NBA star Curry made a statement that read “My beautiful half Haitian mother will be roasting a pig tonight, just like Kamala Harris did during the debate.”  It is true that Steph’s mother, Sonya Curry, is of mixed descent, being Haitian from her mother’s side. So, did he actually say it?

As a matter of fact, no, Curry made no such comment (live or virtual). When ‘Captain Obvious’ was asked about the source by another social media user, he simply replied “I just posted it.” This removed any validity that the remarks carried any form of truth. The same was also repeated by Sports and Political commentator Keith Olbermann, who wanted to assure internet users that the joke was most certainly “written by a satirist” No major news outlets have come out to verify the validity of Curry’s ‘statement.’ But there’s more.

While ‘Captain Obvious’ has uploaded some factual statements from time to time, the X handle has also put out some tweets which have never been proven true. Just yesterday, he also reported that Stephen Curry claimed “Laura Loomer said if Harris is elected, the White House will smell like curry. I’m not running for president.” However, the handle itself recently asked to not take the statements seriously by writing “Snopes, Reuters, and MSNBC are checking to see if my quotes are true. For f**ks sake, I’m just a parody account!”

But what’s interesting is why many people on social media certainly believed so. It would have been easy for people to fall prey to the ‘update’ by ‘Captain Obvious.’ After all, Stephen Curry is known to be a prominent supporter of Kamala Harris. Alongside Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, he was the only other member of the NBA fraternity to hand out his endorsement during the DNC. His official support came weeks after his Gold Medal run at the 2024 Paris Olympics coincided with President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the race and give Harris the reins. In a presser, Curry went on to state “Hopefully with her on the ticket, we’re winning the election. It’s a big deal, to say the least.”

Have an interesting take?

If Warriors fans know something, it is that he will passionately follow a cause, but not so passionately that it would bring out a statement that offends the other side. On top of that, such statements wouldn’t look good for any future presidential runs that the NBA star might want to pursue.

Does Stephen Curry want to run for President?

From time to time, the four-time NBA champion has shown an interest in government service. He served as a board member on Michelle Obama’s ‘When We All Vote’ campaign, and gave out his support during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. Steph Curry has also made his political choices quite apparent in the past, rejecting an offer to go to the White House in 2017 to be honored by President Trump, and endorsing then former Vice President Joe Biden in 2020. All of this has caused people to question: Has Curry ever considered taking the highest office of the land for himself?

As it turns out, the thought has crossed his mind. In a ‘CBS Mornings’ interview back in March, Curry gave out a “maybe” when asked by the interviewer if he sees himself as ‘President’ a few years down the road. He did not reveal any policy ideas he would want to implement. However, he did highlight “I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way that I can.”

When the reporter questioned on and asked if a presidential bid could appear by 2028, Curry laughed and replied “Not that soon.” Till then, Curry has to make sure that the ‘pig’ remarks only remain satirical, and never come out of his own mouth.
