The Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is reportedly selling the majority stake of his team to casino tycoon Miriam Adelson from the legendary Adelson family. Cuban, who bought the Mavericks in 2000 for $285 million, is selling his stake at a valuation of $3.5 billion, as per reports. He transformed the Dallas Mavericks franchise during his 23-year stint as an owner and many players consider him the best owner in the NBA. Cuban is famous for giving his players superstar treatment, and he even takes care of the opponents when they visit the Mavericks arena for games.

Despite Mark Cuban’s transformative ways of treating his players, Dallas has historically been unable to attract big-name free agents. Washington Wizards legend Gilbert Arenas justified the billionaire’s biggest struggle as the Mavericks owner.

Gilbert Arenas talked about Mark Cuban’s 23-year stint as the Dallas Mavericks owner on the Gil’s Arena podcast. He revealed why the big-name free agents have never considered Dallas as an option. According to Arenas, the NBA’s rules do not reward players who leave their home team. While the players can get a 5-year contract for staying with their original team, they lose money and years signing for a new team. And no superstar free agent wants to go to Dallas because they will lose money while playing for a small-market team. “It’s not like you are the Lakers or the Knicks,” Arenas said, revealing the players’ thought process.

Players like LeBron James would rather choose big-market teams like the Lakers and the Knicks than go to Dallas with a pay cut. That is the major reason for Mark Cuban’s failure to sign free agents despite being a generous owner.

Mark Cuban did not fail the Dallas Mavericks. Instead, he turned the franchise around and brought them back to NBA relevance. They had not made the playoffs since 1990, but as soon as Cuban became the owner, they made it to the Western Conference semi-finals. That is the impact Cuban has had on the Mavericks franchise.

Dallas eventually won their first title in franchise history in 2011 under Mark’s ownership. Even this season, Cuban has built one of the best teams in the league, with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving as their franchise players. Mark Cuban had a great run as an owner, and he will continue to work with the Mavericks as he remains in control of their basketball operations even after the deal goes through.
