The Los Angeles Lakers weren’t supposed to be this awful so far into the season. Their In-Season tournament triumph suggested that the Lakers were one of the favorites for the title. However, things haven’t gone according to the script. Since their NBA Cup victory, the Lakers have suffered defeats in ten out of their last 13 games. Their current dismal form has relegated them to a position even outside the play-in spots.

In recent weeks, speculation of the Lakers’ firing head coach Darvin Ham has gained traction. After suffering yet another defeat to the Grizzlies yesterday, LeBron James‘ post-match remarks do provide a hint on Ham’s future.

LeBron James is frustrated by yet another loss

It’s not a good time to be a Lakers fan. Their beloved team has played some abysmal basketball in the last couple of weeks. In fact, the Lakers are currently on a four-game losing streak. After succumbing to another defeat, this time against the Grizzlies, a frustrated LeBron James said, “We had our game plan and how we want to execute that, and I thought we did that as well as we could. They made us pay, though.”

His demeanor and remarks in the interview have surprised a lot of Lakers fans. LeBron looks disappointed and dejected, and rightfully so. But his attitude further justifies recent reports of a growing disconnect between the players and the coaching staff. Due to their terrible current form, reports have emerged that Darvin Ham’s job is under threat. At the moment though, the Lakers front office hasn’t commented on Ham’s future in the team, but if this underwhelming form persists, they wouldn’t hesitate to fire him.

Is Darvin Ham the right man for the job?

Darvin Ham has done a solid job as a Lakers coach up until now. Last season, he guided the Lakers all the way to the Western Conference finals. It is safe to say that he has earned some leeway. Ham addressed rumors of him being on the hot seat in a post-match interview. He said, “My governor, Jeanie Buss, the boss lady; our president, Robert Pelinka — we’re all aligned. As long as they’re not saying it, I guess I’m good.”

But for how long? The Lakers are dangerously close to becoming an afterthought in the title race. They currently occupy the 11th spot in the Western Conference standings, even below the controversy-ridden Warriors. Ham and the Lakers must promptly address their current slump in form if they still harbor ambitions of an NBA title.
