It’s only been a week since the NBA fined Ja Morant $75,000 for making finger gun gestures at the Heat-Grizzlies game. But clearly, Ja has not learned his lesson. That’s because during tonight’s game, he went a step further in throwing down the gauntlet against the NBA. Not just that, he also debuted a new celebration. But first things first.
You remember how Ja was suspended in 2023 for 25 games after toting a gun on social media? How about when both he and Buddy Hield were warned by the league on April 1 for making gun gestures? Well, we’re sure Ja remembers. But whether he cares is another matter altogether. And during tonight’s loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Morant showed how apathetic he can be as he openly challenged the league and Adam Silver.
“That’s my celebration now until somebody else got a problem with it, and I’ll find another one,” said the 25-year-old, making it clear that the controversial celebrations would keep coming. What’s he referring to? Well, that would be the new grenade celebration he debuted in the game against the Charlotte Hornets. This celebration is exactly like it sounds. Ja pretended to take the pin out of a hand grenade before “throwing” it into the crowd. And he hit this celebration in tonight’s game as well.

Players certainly don’t get wilder than Ja Morant, huh? So far, he has not received any punishment for his comments or the new grenade celebration. But it’s only a matter of time before Adam Silver and Co. catch on. Perhaps that’s why Ja had a backup, as he debuted yet another celebration during tonight’s game.
Ja Morant’s latest celebration divides NBA fans
During the second quarter in tonight’s game, Ja Morant drove into the paint with a beautiful finish right under the nose of 4x DPOY Rudy Gobert. But that’s pretty standard for Ja. However, the celebration that followed was anything but that.
He ran back on defense with his arms out, yet a little bent. It was a really confusing gesture that he did not address later on. Even fans online were divided as they tried to interpret the meaning behind it. Some speculated that Ja was imitating cradling or rocking a baby. And that’s a celebration we’ve seen before. Remember when Russell Westbrook used to get a bucket and then immediately rock his arms back and forth like he was holding a baby? Simpler times!
What’s your perspective on:
Is Ja Morant's defiance a bold statement or reckless behavior that needs to be curbed?

However, some speculated that this was actually another thinly veiled gun celebration by Morant. The action resembled someone carrying a heavy rifle or a machine gun, according to their analysis.

Nevertheless, only Ja knows the true meaning of this gesture and why he decided to use it tonight. However, if this is indeed another gun celebration, one thing is clear. Ja Morant has no regard for the rules that Adam Silver and the league try to impose on him. The open challenge and the various celebrations he employs have made that clear.
But how will the league respond to Ja? Is another fine coming his way? Or will his punishment be more severe after repeated offenses? We can’t wait to hear what you’ve got to say!
