The Dallas Mavericks are looking forward to their matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Still, the coming game isn’t the only thing interesting- Daniel Gafford is at the center of trading buzz. While head coach Jason Kidd sings Gafford’s praises, there seems to be some uncertainty around his future with Dallas.

Gafford has got some serious skills this year, with numbers that hover around 11.7 points, 6.0 boards, and 1.5 blocks a game. His shot-blocking abilities inside provide them with a defensive linchpin and a solid option when scoring points close to the basket. But Christian Clark of The Athletic reports that Gafford is on the trade block as Dallas looks to improve its perimeter defense.

Complicating matters, Gafford recently suffered an ankle injury during a game against the Denver Nuggets. Coach Kidd indicated that Gafford is “likely going to be out for some time,” adding another layer of complexity to potential trade scenarios. However, Kidd remains vocal about Gafford’s importance to the team, stating, “We’ve got to hold onto the ball, because everybody is swinging at it, so if he can get it above his head…Gaff has to dominate the paint. We’ve got to get the ball to him.

Gafford’s role and the Mavericks’ defensive needs

If Gafford’s healthy, you can’t deny that he’s gonna have an impact on the court. With his rim-protection ability and finishing with a lot of authority, he is a valuable trade asset. However, that is where the Mavericks feel a pressing need for an overhaul of their perimeter defense. This has led to the front office considering sending Gafford to the block and getting a wing defender in return.

I’ll tell ya something: it could mean a big risk in possibly moving Gafford. His contributions towards interior defense and rebounding are critical, with finding a replacement as productive as he is, quite difficult. In addition, Gafford’s recently sprained ankle may affect his trade value, as teams with a tentative timeframe on his recovery may not want to acquire him.

While looking at trades, there has been some speculation with respect to the Dallas Mavericks lining up a number of players who could address their defensive needs. A former efficient defensive-player-off-the-bench Dorian Finney-Smith has seemed to be in the line of targets.

The team is also taking a look at Jimmy Butler out of the Miami Heat. Apparently, he’s interested in joining teams like the Mavs, the Houston Rockets, the Golden State Warriors, or the Phoenix Suns.

However, acquiring a player of Butler’s caliber would likely require a substantial trade package, potentially including Gafford and other assets.

Balancing immediate goals with long-term strategy

The Mavericks are in a good spot trying to strengthen their roster for a deep playoff run. Trading Gafford could solve their perimeter defense issues, but would wreak havoc in their interior defense. This situation forces the front office to balance the immediate benefits of a perimeter defender against the long-term ramifications of losing a talent like Gafford.

Kidd’s open encouragement for Gafford shows us just how much the young player is enhancing the franchise right now. Sadly, a little realistic look at this whole team environment and chess-board-type action shifting will mean some tough calls in the coming days. The Mavs now must take close note of what’s on their radar as the impending trade deadline approaches, doing their best to balance the wish for defensive integrity and cohesion with the requirement of the new-look lineup.
