The Los Angeles Lakers selected Bronny James in the 2024 NBA draft with their 55th pick. It ended as one of the most controversial draft picks in recent times for obvious reasons. James Jr. after an underwhelming freshman year at USC, declared for the draft and the father’s team ultimately took him in, igniting a wildfire in the NBA world. A large section of fans accused the superstar and his agent, Rich Paul, of influencing the Lakers into the decision.

While the commotion has already subsided and with Bronny yet to prove himself, Rich Paul recounted why Bronny’s draft was important. Speaking at the ‘MILLION DOLLAZ WORTH OF GAME’ podcast, the 43-year-old said, “It was very important for me to make that happen. Being there when he was born.” 

In fact, Paul stressed the “important” part twice, giving away his emotional involvement with his new client. Obviously, why wouldn’t Rich Paul take Bronny’s draft emotionally? After all, it was his dad, LeBron James, who took him under his wing from the beginning and helped him establish one of the most successful agencies in the NBA world. Speaking of Klutch Sports, Paul clarified that he and his team have so far dealt with $4 billion worth of NBA contracts for 45 players in the same podcast. Despite the volume of his success, Rich Paul has an emotional obligation to protect Bronny.

The starting quote could be puzzling for a few. Well, here’s the answer. It was a response given to a persistent reporter, who was baiting Rich Paul into giving out a controversial statement. Following Bronny James’ draft night, a reporter interrupted Rich Paul at the LA airport (LAX) and addressed the elephant in the room. The nepotism argument. However, Paul pretty much seemed unfazed by the reporter.

Responding to the reporter, Paul said, “Yeah, he deserves to be in the NBA. Lot of different people say a lot of different things… Often times when things happen in a positive way, people decide how they want to view it… If that’s nepotism, then so be it.” 

While the statement sparked conversations around nepotism, Paul had already featured in an exclusive interview with Bleacher Report and made his clarification. He added, “Some may feel like he’s getting an opportunity because of his father, and I think that’s a very naive logic, especially in America… When you look at America as a whole, it’s built on nepotism.” 

The bottom line here is that Paul, who had the option to ignore these questions, took it upon himself to defend his friend’s son. It shows nothing but how much he loves Bronny James.
