Comparisons and debates around the best players of the league are a never-ending saga in the NBA world. Analysts and pundits have always dragged superstars like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant into various conversations and debates on live TV and online spaces. And once in a while, rising superstars would also find their way into the debate. In that line-up, New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson ended up at the receiving end of a WNBA legend’s recent analogy.
Brunson made it big in the NBA last week with his career-high score of 50 points against the Phoenix Suns. The 27-year-old not only made his high score, but also made a franchise record of scoring 9 three-points in a single game. Since then, he has been included in the conversations surrounding franchise leaders. And it hasn’t been going great for the star. Let’s dig deep into the affair.

WNBA legend and Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon joined the conversation on Jalen Brunson’s space among the other star franchise leader. She didn’t seemed to be impressed with Brunson. Appearing on ESPN’s NBA Today, she took a dig from Brunson and assured that the 6 ‘2 star can’t lead his team to the ring.
She said, “They’re [Knicks] well-coached, they’re going to be on their defensive game, but at the end of the day, they don’t have a dude… You gotta have a dude, you gotta have a 1A dude and they’re missing that.” By A1, she meant LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, on the same show.
However, things didn’t pan out well for Hammon, as she received a lot of backlash. She took to her X handle to clarify her statement once again, with a caption, “For the record…”

While Hammon considered height as a necessary feature to carry a team to the championship glory, the history says something else.
Has the league only been kind to tall players?

The answer is BIG NO. While Becky Hammon considered 6 ‘2 Stephen Curry as an A1 tier player and called 6 ‘2 Brunson, “smallest player on the court.” In the retrospect, Steph is the most successful player in the last decade, winning 2 MVPS and 4 championship rings.
And, it wasn’t the case during the late 1980s also when the league was dominated with aggressive game play. The times when three-point shooting wasn’t as fancy as it is now. 6 ‘1 Isiah Thomas led the Pistons to two consecutives rings in 1989 and 1990.
Similarly, Brunson has all the tricks in his bag, leaving the pundits scratch their heads, securing a career best average of 25.3 points, 6 assists per game in the season. We will have to wait to see if Brunson could deliver for his team.
