Over the last decade, sports consumption has seen many changes. Earlier television was the only source and fans depended only on the mainstream analysts for expert opinions. However, in recent times, after the advent of podcasts and social media, players and other personalities found their own voice and also a passage to glory. Notably, former NBA star JJ Redick, an already-experienced podcaster, made a big fortune with the Lakers. And fans think they have cracked the code to enter the US sports market.
Following the disappointing exit from the 2024 playoffs, the LA Lakers dismissed their head coach, Darvin Ham. Immediately, the hype surrounding the LA side’s hunt for their next HC took over the NBA world. At that time, LeBron James surprised everyone with his very own podcast show alongside JJ Redick. It, in turn, catapulted a speculation that Redick would soon take over the coaching vacancy. Rightly so, several weeks later, after a bunch of drama, the Lakers hired the former player for a four-year coaching contract.
Reacting to it, Coley Mick of Underdog Fantasy wrote, “You can do anything if you start a podcast. Date Taylor Swift, coach the Lakers, there are no limits to the fruits it may bear,” via his X handle.

Just like Coley Mick pointed out, Redick indeed became the HC of the Lakers just by starting a podcast show without any coaching experience. Notably, the Lakers have the tradition of hiring a former Purple & Gold star for the role. The 39-year-old not only entered the coaching business without experience but also broke the age-old tradition.
At the same time, some might wonder about the context of “Date Taylor Swift”. Well, that has the easiest explanation. Travis Kelce, before dating the popstar, Taylor Swift expressed his wish to date her in the podcast, New Heights.
Fans explode after Coley Mick’s ‘podcast’ comment
Reacting to Mick’s post, fans couldn’t agree more with it. They swarmed the comments section with hilarious takes and memes. A fan agreeing to the post, wrote, “Yup, lol. doors just slowly start to open.” While this fan just agreed to the post, some of the fans listed the things that Coley Mich had missed.
A fan wrote, “S**t even build submarines and ride on a duck boat in a championship parade!!” While there isn’t an exact source of when these instances were mentioned in a podcast. But, the Boston Celtics‘ parade in a duck boat was a long time in the making. While it’s the first time for the Celts’ player to celebrate their championship on a duck boat, Joe Mazzulla takes a second trip.
Speaking of it, the Celts HC said, “We’re doing our staff retreat in Boston… we’re going to… do the duck boat tour so we can understand the city and the history… So we did one at the beginning of the year and we’re gonna end with one.” Another fan disappointed with the post expressed his feelings through a meme.

On the other hand, some fans disagreed with the opinion and defended the Lakers’ coach selection process. A fan wrote, “He was a former player, so pipe down with that podcast bs. A good amount of coaches use to play.” Another fan came right back at Coley Mick with a UNO reverse. They wrote, “It’s kept your dumba*s afloat. Boom, roasted.” Nevertheless, fans took the statement on a lighter note.
