Weeks after the Charlotte Hornets trade, Kyle Lowry finally gets a break. After being inactive on the court since the Hornets trade, Lowry agreed to a buyout, enabling him to sign a contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. The 37-year-old, who spent his last three seasons with the Miami Heat, got caught up in a trade mess on January 23 this year when the Heat traded him to the Hornets.
Hornets GM Mitch Kupchak also revealed that the star point guard won’t be available until the trade deadline, hinting that he would be a buyout candidate. Fortunately, Sixers’ Daryl Morey came to his rescue and roped him to the side for a whopping $2.8 million for the remainder of the season, as per Adrian Wojnarowski.

Kyle Lowry played the back-up point guard role for the Heat and he averaged 8.2 points in 37 games this season. He also played a crucial role in the second unit, helping the Heat reach the 2023 NBA Finals. However, the team didn’t require his service beyond the first half of this season, which left him to take shelter at the 13th seeding Hornets.
Terry Rozier, who moved to the Heat in replacement for Lowry, immediately began playing for the side, whereas the veteran point guard opted for the buyout option and stayed inactive. The 37-year-old was in a $30 million annual contract and $2.8 million seemed the only viable option for him.
Moreover, several reports also suggested that the Sixers were on the lookout for Lowry via the buyout option following the Patrick Beverley trade. And, eventually, they landed it.
Let’s take a look at Lowry’s role at the Sixers bench.

Patrick Beverley played an impressive role as an orchestrator off the bench, averaging 6.3 points and 3.1 assists per game. And the Sixers traded him off to the Milwaukee Bucks, opening a position for the veteran point guard.
As speculated in the trade rumors, the Sixers used the buy out option to land Lowry. The 2019 NBA Champion, who is in the last leg of his career, can put his experience to use and help Joel Embiid get his first ring.
The Sixers will take on the in-form Cavs on Monday and it could be Lowry’s first game since his trade in late January. Will he put this chance to use and make the maximum out of it? Only time will tell.
