The LA Lakers front office did all it could to keep LeBron James on the roster. Now, the attention has shifted to Anthony Davis after he showed signs of restraint after the JJ Redick hire. Multiple reports stated that the Lakers’ big man would find his way out if they didn’t rope in Rajon Rondo into the coaching unit. While Rob Pelinka has to think on his feet to keep the 9x NBA All-Star happy, D’Angelo Russell‘s impending decision could save the night for the team.
The Lakers PG, D’Lo went under a lot of scrutiny during the last season after a poor stretch. However, he managed to end the regular season well, averaging 19 points with 6.3 assists per game. While it seemed like Russell secured his future in the side, the poor postseason run again put him in the scanner. He averaged 14 points in five games, which also included a scoreless game. Notably, Russell had the player option, heading into the 2nd year of his contract.
Many reports claimed that Russell would opt out of the contract and find a new spot. The Lakers guard, Austin Reaves, speaking after the season, said, “I want him to be around. That’s probably my best friend on the team. We hang out off the court and golf a lot together.” While AR has already expressed for D’Lo to stay on the side, he has joined Anthony Davis to push the front office to retain him, as per DOM.

Rob Pelinka has no better opportunity than this to keep AD happy and convince Russell to sign the player option. Moreover, the latest update from ESPN’s Dave McMenamin confirmed that the star point guard has decided to opt in contract, which is $18.7 million worth.
Can the Lakers trust D’Angelo Russell for another season?
After a meltdown in the first-round series against the Denver Nuggets, the Lakers have taken a bold decision to retain the star. Speaking after his $18 million decision, Russell said, “I love what JJ is about and I really see myself thriving under his guidance to help win at a high level.”

Heading into the Lakers fold, JJ Redick has already made himself clear. Even though he felt that the current team was not far from fetching a championship, he seemed to be more focused on player development. Several reports already stated JJ’s ambition to develop AR into the third superstar of the team, D’Lo’s latest decision, can bring some changes. Russell already claimed the third superstar title on the roster, but he lost it immediately after he failed to deliver on the big stage.
