Months after Damian Lillard hinted at a trade request, NBA commissioner Adam Silver has dropped a memo to all the teams. Many analysts and fans considered this particular memo as one of its kind. Notably, NBA legend J. J. Redick said that he had never seen any memo that only discussed the affairs of an individual, that is Lillard. Moreover, a veteran ESPN writer has assured fans that the Portland Trail Blazers star won’t land in any trouble because of his loyalty.

As per the rules of the league, no player can publicly demand a trade request. For instance, the league once slapped Anthony Davis with a $50,000 fine for publicly demanding a trade in 2019. However, in Dame’s case, the commissioner just sent a warning to the Blazers star and a general address to all the teams, as per Redick.

Why didn’t the NBA fine Damian Lillard?

7x NBA All-Star Damian Lillard has emerged as one of the greatest shooters in his 11-season-long career with the Blazers. Despite his shooting prowess, the star cannot wield a championship ring yet.

Moreover, after the poor finish to the 2022-23 season, he hinted at his exit from the Blazers and vested his interest in the Miami Heat. While some analysts expected the league to take action against the star for publicly demanding a change, he continued to seek the trade.

Furthermore, after the league dropped the memo, ESPN‘s veteran reporter, Ramona Shelburne, reasoned why Dame wasn’t fined. She said, “Damian Lillard’s been loyal this whole time.”

She further highlighted other high-profile player who sought trades multiple times in the past. Notably, she said, “James Harden’s asked for three trades… Damian Lillard sat back and been loyal… for a long time.” [sic]
