The Dallas Mavericks are on cloud nine after their game against the Atlanta Hawks. The franchise’s primal force, Luka Doncic just made history. He set the fourth-highest scoring mark, going off for 73 points against the very team that drafted him. After the game, embraces were in order. But the celebration will have to be short-lived. The Mavs play on back-to-back nights and their opponents are a herculean force – the Sacramento Kings.

From the time they made the playoffs last season, breaking a 16-year drought, the Kings have been a formidable contender. Led by De’Aaron Fox, the young group has a collection of starlets who have all proved they can change the tides if needed. Apart from the rapid and cold-blooded Fox, Domantas Sabonis. Keegan Murray and Malik Monk are having their best campaigns.

Being in the same conference, it’s a vital matchup for the Mavericks to measure their competitive position. It means Luka Doncic will have to be as good as today if they want to win. But is he playing?

Luka Doncic’s status for the game against the Sacramento Kings

If you are Doncic, fresh off dropping 73 points, you want to do nothing else but hoop more. The Slovenian guard looked more majestic than usual. The Hawks’ defense was scrambling for answers, but all they got was buckets from Luka Magic. Surprisingly, he went near perfect from the free throw line en route to his blazing 73-point night.

But while on one end is celebration, the other end is fatigue. After such a high production night, one can’t expect Doncic to recover so soon. So far, Doncic has been part of four back-to-backs for the Mavs this season out of the seven possible. He missed those games due to injuries. The 24-year-old is yet to take a day off as ‘rest’. Likewise, he will most likely not miss a crucial game against the Kings.

Doncic is the engine for the Mavericks. At 24, he has barely thought about rest. The 6’7″ guard is on a mission to take the Mavericks to the promise land just like his mentor Dirk Nowitzki did in 2011. If that means he has to play without rest, Luka Doncic has shown he will do so. Averaging a career-best 34 points, the Slovenian will look to feed off his historic night and play with that same electric energy.

In other news, Kyrie Irving, who has missed the last two games due to a thumb injury remains to be monitored as day-to-day. Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber, and Derrick Jones all share the same status.

Assuming KAI doesn’t return and Jones will be given rest, the Mavericks will lineup with Luka Doncic, Grant Williams, Josh Green, Derek Lively II, and Richard Holmes if Kleber doesn’t return.
