Early on Sunday, reports from Dallas revealed a disturbing incident involving Darrell Armstrong. The Mavs assistant coach was charged with ‘aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon as per the reports. The victim, a woman, called the police at 2:15 am where they found her alongside her father at a nearby 7-Eleven.

According to her affidavit, she and the Mavericks assistant coach got into an argument after she found texts from another woman on his phone. It was followed by an aggressive agreement where Armstrong turned “irate” and demanded the keys to the apartment. Their confrontation continued.

During this time, the 56-year-old was on a phone call with another person when he picked up his firearm and hit the woman on the right cheek. Armstrong even threatened to shoot her, according to WFAA. The officers at the scene confirmed a bruise on the right cheek. Later, she left the apartment and made her way to 7-Eleven on the corner of Ross Avenue and N. Griffin Street to call her family.

According to the victim, Darrell Armstrong shares a history of violence with her. She revealed there had been other incidents of such violence. Reportedly, she claims the Mavericks assistant coach “strangled” her on one occasion. However, she refused to report the crime, fearing the repercussions Armstrong would possibly face.

Darrell Armstrong was later arrested at his apartment and booked into jail at 7:30 a.m. His bond was set at $35,000 and he has since posted for the bond.

Dallas Mavericks release statement over Darrell Armstrong

The Dallas community has been trying to heal. Ever since the trade for Luka Doncic, there has been resettlement. Protests and fans berating their own franchise at the American Airlines Center have become a regular sight. Still, it being basketball, there’s always hope for such a situation to be repaired through results. That was the core reason Nico Harrison played the risk of being a perpetual villain for the franchise.

But this situation further deepens their woes.

After Armstrong’s arrest, the Mavericks released a statement acknowledging the incident. Currently, they have placed him under “administrative suspension” as the investigation continues.

The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident. We take this matter seriously. The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing,” the franchise said in their statement.

As for Armstrong, the only response was through his attorney, Larry Taylor. “We are in the preliminary stages of conducting our own independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding yesterday’s incident involving my client Darrell Armstrong,” he said, further highlighting that Darrell has been nothing but an “upstanding member of the Dallas community during his playing days and as a coach.”

Taylor promised that there’s going to be more clarity on the matter in the coming days.

As the legal process continues, both the Dallas Mavericks and Darrell Armstrong’s legal team are focused on gathering further information, with additional details expected in the coming days.
