Could Kevin Durant's return to the Warriors make them unstoppable again? What do you think?

It’s been over five years now since NBA star player Kevin Durant left the Golden State Warriors. Five years since he stopped playing under the tutelage of renowned head coach Steve Kerr and became his on-court rival. Despite this, the duo still got a chance to work together on the international stage whenever both were named to the Team USA roster. Now, with the 2024 Paris Olympics set to commence in less than a month, both are reunited once again in the hope that together, they can win a fifth consecutive gold medal for their country. When taking a break from the practice sessions, the duo found time to catch up.

A few hours ago, the official X account of ‘Warriors on NBCS highlighted Durant and Kerr taking a break during the ongoing Team USA training camp being held in Vegas. The player and the coach seemed to be engaging in a casual conversation, audible enough to be heard amidst the hustle and bustle of the other players busy in practice. It’s not every day that one gets to see the duo casually having a chat. The sight became even rarer to witness once Durant left Kerr’s NBA team for the Brooklyn Nets back in 2019. Therefore, it didn’t take long for the mysterious question to be raised: What were Steve Kerr and Kevin Durant talking about?

Along with LeBron James and Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant counts amongst the best veterans in the modern NBA. Despite this, the only two times he won championships was when he served as a power forward/small forward for the Warriors. He was even awarded the Finals MVP title alongside the Larry O’Brien trophy on both occasions. With the player set to turn 36 less than three months from now, his peak playing days might be behind him.

When Durant left the Warriors back in 2019, he stated, “I Just Wanted to Play Ball Somewhere Else”, making it clear that a return might not be so easy to happen.

Fans speculate on the context behind Kevin Durant and Steve Kerr’s conversation

As the video of Kerr and Durant having a conversation surfaced on the internet, one social media user let his intuitive thoughts win and commented “Tryna see if he would come back to the warriors.” After all, hasn’t that question crossed the minds of many?

Another user held a similar belief that Kevin Durant was attempting to talk Kerr into letting him back into the Warriors. However, he also imagined that Durant might have been putting some ‘conditions’, that might involve getting rid of power forward Draymond Green. That way, the Warriors would get Durant, Klay Thompson, and Jordan Poole back as a package deal.

Klay Thompson was the most recent athlete to exit the Warriors. His 13-year stint with the franchise came to an end after both parties could not decide upon a suitable extension deal. According to sports journalist Bobby Marks, cutting ties with Thompson would have been easier for the Warriors than in a hypothetical situation involving either Stephen Curry or Draymond Green.“We know Steph’s not going anywhere, Draymond is a pretty unique piece, he doesn’t fit everywhere, Klay Thompson fits anywhere,” Marks said.

Therefore, until the franchise can find a good enough replacement for Draymond Green, he is here to stay. One user highlighted his belief that Kerr was bringing up the name of Draymond Green himself, stating that “keeping Dray” instead of him was a mistake.

Kevin Durant’s stint with the Warriors during the 2016-2019 period saw the player reach new heights in terms of success. However, he would often get into disagreements with Draymond Green, causing some behind-the-scenes clashes between the teammates. The feud eventually made its way to the public eye during a match against the LA Clippers back in 2018. Durant criticized Green for missing a shot, causing the latter to reportedly state that the Warriors didn’t need the 2x Finals MVP. According to former franchise player Quinn Cook, the Warriors “didn’t handle it right” and just let the animosity build on until Durant eventually left.

Another fan imagined that it was Durant who brought up Green’s name, stating that the player will “screw up” the franchise.

Over the past few years, Draymond Green has proven himself as an exceptional player. At the same time, however, his achievements have been overshadowed by his on-court, ‘villain player’ type demeanor that has created quite some trouble for himself and the Warriors. In November 2023, the player was suspended for five days after putting Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert in a chokehold.

A month later, he again got aggressive by hitting Jusuf Nurkic in the face, receiving an additional suspension of seventeen days. When the player was suspended for another game back in March 2024, it was enough to bring lead scorer Stephen Curry to the verge of tears. One user believed that Kerr was making Kevin Durant regret his past decision.

After Kevin Durant’s exit, the Warriors won another championship in 2022. While Kevin Durant was able to get the Brooklyn Nets and the Phoenix Suns to the playoffs, the teams never saw the Finals stage. One would insinuate if Durant’s efforts had been placed alongside Stephen Curry and Co, then he would have had the 2022 championship as well as another one won by their combined effort.
