Superstar athletes are a brand. People tune in to watch them and fans want to emulate their lifestyle. More often than not, star athletes trademark their likeness and Coach Prime is no different. The Colorado Buffaloes’ head coach follows in the footsteps of NBA icon LeBron James. He recently filed four trademark applications with the government.

Players and coaches have worked long and hard on their craft and because of their hard work, they achieve a level of fame only a few people get. And to profit from that fame and likeness, they have many avenues. Filing for a trademark is one of them.

LeBron James filed a trademark application for the phrase “Taco Tuesday” in August 2019. The application, submitted through his company, LBJ Trademarks LLC, aimed to protect the phrase for various commercial ventures. This includes ventures such as social media and online entertainment.

However, this trademark application generated significant attention and controversy. This is because “Taco Tuesday” is a widely used and generic phrase to describe a popular tradition of enjoying tacos on Tuesdays. Due to its common usage, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) initially refused the trademark registration in September 2019. The reason cited was that the phrase was too common and lacked distinctiveness. LeBron James’ company no longer owns the phrase “Taco Tuesday” since they abandoned the trademark application in December 2019.

Coach Prime A.K.A Deion Sanders also wants to trademark four terms. ‘Prime Effect’, ‘Coach Prime’, ‘It’s Personal’, and ‘Daddy Buck’ are the four terms that he wants to trademark. If accepted, then people would not be allowed to use these four terms without the prior approval of Deion Sanders. Unlike LeBron’s “Taco Tuesday”, certain phrases that Coach Prime has looked to trademark are not commonly used. And it’s to be seen if the USPTO approves them or not.
