Kick-starting their trade season, the New York Knicks acquired OG Anunoby, Malachi Flynn, and Precious Achiuwa, sending away Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, and a 2024 second-round pick to the Toronto Raptors. This trade wasn’t surprising because it was an open secret that the Knicks had their eyes on Anunoby for quite some time. After securing him, they are still active in the trade market.
The Knicks are rumored to have their next target locked on the Cavaliers‘ guard, Donovan Mitchell. If this is true, they might be disappointed as they don’t have the best news coming their way, according to a source familiar with the Cavs’ point of view.
Trading Donovan is out of the question

In a recent episode of the Wine and Gold Talk Podcast, a reporter for Clevelanddotcom Chris Fedor, asserts that the Cavs are not willing to put Donovan’s name on the table. “The Cavs have zero interest in trading Donovan Mitchell. They haven’t even thought about that,” he says.
Further, it appears Mitchell himself is happy where he is, and is in no way looking forward to changing that anytime soon, “Beyond that, and I’ve talked to Donovan about this multiple times, he is happy right now where he is at. He is happy being a Cleveland Cavalier. He believes in this team. He believes in this roster.”
Chris adds that the Cavs are not interested in furthering any sort of communication with any other team in regards to Donovan. “The Cavs aren’t in a situation where they are even interested in listening to what teams are going to offer them for Donovan Mitchell. They’re not even considering that at the moment.” For the Knicks, Donovan has always been the one that got away, ever since his time in Utah.
The Knicks’ affinity for Donovan
Since his days with the Jazz, Donovan’s name had always sparked interest in the Knicks. In September 2022, the consensus was that he would land in New York. However, the Utah Jazz’s President Danny Ainge took everyone by surprise when he traded the Spida to the Cavs instead.

And now, the Cavs are not entertaining the idea of giving up Donovan. This might be their way of retaining their current core, especially in a scenario where they have found a good balance in Donovan, Jarrett Allen, and Evan Mobley. Donovan refused to sign a contract extension with the Cavs last summer, so they might probably look forward to offering him another extension this season.
