The New Orleans Pelicans announced that their guard, CJ McCollum, has been diagnosed with a small pneumothorax in his right lung after medical imaging on Sunday morning. The team also announced that additional examinations will be performed in the next 48 hours to determine the progress of healing. It puts a pause on the guard’s impressive run this season with the Pelicans.

This is not the first time that he has been diagnosed with the issue. Previously in December 2021, during his time with the Portland Trail Blazers, McCollum suffered from the same.

An opportunity to smile despite the gloom

Despite the sad atmosphere, the 32-year-old could still find something to joke about. Basketball Forever posted the announcement to their social media handle along with a picture of CJ. The image used had him holding onto his chest, a premonition perhaps of his upcoming condition. But, the guard was able to poke fun at it as he quoted their tweet with a reply saying, “This is an insane pic to post with the news

We are glad he can find amusement in the midst of this situation. During his last diagnosis with Portland, McCollum recovery process took two and a half weeks after the initial diagnosis. He then required three more weeks before was declared fit to play. In total, he missed eighteen games that season. With this development, it is still to be seen how long this will persist. In case the issue recurs, he would have to undergo a minor surgical procedure.

The Pelicans’ impressive play this season

New Orleans has been playing well this season, recording four wins in the six games they have played. McCollum has been the best player in these games along with Zion Williamson. He has an average of 21.7 points, 5.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals. With this, it is doubtful how the team will recover from this setback.

The Pelicans have had quite a few players miss their games this season. Trey Murphy with left meniscus, Jose Alvarado with a right ankle sprain and Naji Marshall who suffers from a right knee contusion are all yet to play for the team. Brandon Ingram, who missed three games because of right knee tendinitis, was finally able to play on Saturday against the Atlanta Hawks.
