The value of a veteran’s composure was endorsed by CJ McCollum tonight in the Pelicans’ game against the Washington Wizards. In the low-seeded matchup, the 33-year-old matched his career-high scoring 50 points in the win. The former Portland guard continues to be a major influence for the Pelicans. However, there are still reports of the franchise looking to move on from McCollum.
Notably, Brett Seigel reported their “openness” to listen to offers for the scoring virtuoso. The veteran had dealt with injury issues and his age also may have played a factor. However, he did point out some doubts. “Whether or not a market exists for the 33-year-old is an unknown leading up to the trade deadline,” Seigel said.
Well, after a career night and guiding the Pelicans to a rare victory this season, CJ McCollum is confident about his value. It didn’t come without him relaying his faith in the franchise. But when speaking of a possible trade, it doesn’t faze McCollum. It’s because Bill Simmons, a revered journalist has often mentioned the 33-year-old since his days with Portland. And McCollum ensured he takes a sly dig at him.

“After my third year, Bill Simmons had me getting traded every week… This team values me and I’m sure other teams value me. I like the city. My wife likes the city. My kids are happy here,” McCollum said after his 50-point performance. “My value is going to be exactly where it needs to be”.

Although 33 years of age, CJ McCollum is an experienced postseason performer. Competitive teams could heavily value his wisdom. Furthermore, his scoring touch hasn’t faded. McCollum is averaging his second-most points since joining the Pelicans. But with such a great resume, why would the franchise look for a trade?
Why the New Orleans Pelicans want to trade CJ McCollum

The Pelicans’ hunt for a trade isn’t relevant to the way McCollum performs. Or at least it doesn’t seem to be. The franchise is currently poised to make several key decisions by the time the next offseason rolls around. That includes possibly parting ways with Brandon Ingram. But McCollum’s case might be fairly recent.
The New Orleans Pelicans expect to be a competitive side having committed to their future with Zion Williamson. Despite the run of injuries to the Duke phantom throughout his career, the Pels haven’t wavered away from him. Currently, though, they have the worst record in the league and placed to pay taxes.
As a franchise, not once have the Pelicans had the need to pay taxes. But with a contending stand, they wouldn’t mind doing so. With a 6-29 record though, the story is different. Breaking their pattern for such a season may not be in the best interest of the front office. And with CJ McCollum making $33 million, offloading his contract helps them fall under the tax threshold.

As far as interest in the former Trail Blazers guard, teams could step up. While his salary could be an issue, McCollum has a declining contract. That could be tempting for some teams around the league. Additionally, the Pelicans also have to accommodate Trey Murphy’s salary increase next season. Hence, creating space without going overboard might be a priority for the franchise.
Nonetheless, if CJ McCollum does get traded, which team do you think best suits him? Let us know your views in the comments below.
