Despite several assumptions and speculations, the deal between the Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson and the team’s front office has not come to a conclusion. Since there are only 10 days left in Thompson’s free agency, there is a chance that the 34-year-old will be the Dubs. However, there is another key player for Steve Kerr’s coached team who can bring in fortune if presented with the required offer. It is Kevon Looney who can work as a center and also does not cost too much for the team.

Only $5 million is left of his $8 million to be guaranteed for next season. Moreover, there are chances that Kerr will retain him as a new veteran center would cost much more than that. The Dubs are already above the luxury tax, and they cannot afford to lose in the next season, either. On top of that, Looney is in the good books of Coach Kerr due to his locker room presence. Coming to Klay Thompson, he generated interest from the Orlando Magic front office. However, there is no update as of now, according to league sources. In addition to that, there is another player whom the Warriors might release this year.

It is point guard Chris Paul who has a $30 million non-guaranteed contract with the Dubs. If Kerr decides to bring back youth and hit a reset in the team, Paul will be a boon. They can choose not to retain his player option and look for young guns. However, both of the players who can weigh down the Warriors’ hefty expenditure are Kerr’s loved ones. Even in April this year, Kerr told Reuters, “We need Klay back.” So, it will not be so easy to let go of Klay Thompson and Chris Paul without any major return.

What are Klay Thompson’s options at the Warriors if he is not moving to other teams?

The main concern about Klay Thompson’s stay at the GSW is not about the deal; it’s about the term. As per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Klay might have a two-year contract from his team up ahead. However, the role of the guard might be different this time as the front office is looking for a change, according to Athletic. Moreover, the Dubs are desperate to skip the second apron and reside below the cap to avoid the luxury tax.

No doubt the Warriors are in grave trouble and need some changes. However, the situation’s urgency is evident from the fact that they are ready to duck their legend Klay Thompson. He has won four championships out of the 13 seasons that he played wearing their jersey. Yet, the only option he has is to settle for short money and tenure with his team.

Eventually, it might end up in an unexpected bargain between Thomspon and the Dubs for a comfortable price. Though it might be uncomfortable for the 34-year-old, it’ll keep him in his comfort zone. What’s your prediction about the scenario? Is there any other possibility that Thompson can explore? Let us know in the comments.
