The OKC Thunder may be sitting comfortably at the top of the Western Conference, but there’s still a gap they haven’t been able to fill. Though the team hasn’t struggled too much in Holmgren’s absence, especially with his ability to seamlessly connect the frontcourt and backcourt, their recent defeat against the Warriors might be a sign that somewhere down the line they’re missing him more than expected. However, a new update has emerged about the star and it could mean a solution to the problem.
A video has been making the rounds on social media platform X, showing Chet Holmgren taking part in the shootaround ahead of the Thunder’s upcoming game against the Kings. The big man not only looked fit enough to sink some shots but also managed to throw down a two-handed dunk. This could be a positive sign for both the franchise and the player, who have been eagerly waiting for his return to the hardwood.

The team has been without Holmgren since last November because of his pelvic fracture injury. The 7-foot-1 center was only able to appear in ten games this season. During which he showcased his talent in both scoring and rim protection, averaging 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks.
While Holmgren’s soon return is good news for the franchise, there’s still something holding them back from making a move this trade deadline. It’s not that they’re overly eager to add any assets right now, but they’re keeping their options open. However, even future deals come with a high cost for OKC.
According to Tim Bontemps, “The Thunder staring at a payroll of roughly $191 million for seven players, basically ensuring Oklahoma City would be in the luxury tax.” The obstacle creating this issue is their star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s maximum contract extension for the next season. “And that’s before the following season, when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be starting a supermax extension that would begin at a staggering $72 million if current projections hold,” the ESPN reported stated. “So any deal that happens now, sources told me, would have to be made with an eye toward the future, as the salaries for this burgeoning young core start to get wildly more expensive.” For now, that can wait, as the real question is when Holmgren will rejoin the squad.

More details on Chet Holmgren’s return
Chet Holmgren sustained the hip injury in a game against the Warriors after colliding with Andrew Wiggins, falling hard on the floor and hitting his right hip directly. From that moment, it was clear that the 22-year-old would be on the franchise’s injury report for an extended period.
The franchise soon confirmed that Holmgren would be ruled out for 8-10 weeks, after which his condition would be re-evaluated. That is expected to happen around the All-Star week which means the wait is finally coming to an end. And the cherry on top is his practice session, which highlights his recovery. On Saturday, it was reported that he attempted light one-on-zero shooting and engaged in some physical activities, marking a promising step forward, which could be good news for the fanbase.
