Is Charles Barkley right to call out Adam Silver's new rules as nonsense?

If there is one thing that has remained consistent with Charles Barkley since the last decade, that has been his disdain for the Golden State Warriors. While his role as a prominent television analyst would compel him to take an unbiased view of the different franchises, the Warriors are one he’s often critical of. Calling them out to be the “jump-shooting team”, the former 76ers legend was certainly someone who noticed the Golden State’s performance and decided that their best days were behind them.

This disdain returned as Barkley sat down for an interview with ESPN’s Hannah Storm, admitting that the franchise had a great run up till this point, he does not believe that an aging roster will allow the franchise to secure another championship title to their name. Furthermore, the fact that Stephen Curry and Co couldn’t progress far during the recent NBA season did not help things. On the other hand, it gave Barkley the ammunition to not only roast the franchise further but also take an alleged shot at NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

“They had a great run… They just got older. That happens to all great teams. You get older, and you can’t listen. I don’t think anybody wants to see that… The Warriors had their run, it was great for the NBA, but Hannah, they (Warriors) were in the Play-In, they weren’t even in the Playoffs” said the 61-year-old. “They were in the Play-In. That’s not even a real thing. That’s some stuff Adam Silver made up. God Bless the Soul.”

The Play-In series first came into fruition in 2020, 74 years after the NBA was established. The tournament gave the teams, who finished between the 7 and the 10 seed on the points table, a second chance to earn a spot in the playoffs. Barkley has never been a fan of the same, claiming back in March that “The play-in’s not a real thing, just for the record. That’s just something we made up, Shaq. Just like the CBI (College Basketball Invitational).” Add this to the fact that the Golden State Warriors could only manage to reach the Play-In series during the 2023-24 season, and Barkley had the point to prove that the franchise no longer possesses the same caliber as it did in the earlier days.

The 76ers legend’s recent remark came barely a few hours after he openly took a shot not only at the Warriors franchise but also its fans. In an interview with KCRA News, Barkley talked about rooting for the Sacramento Kings simply because “They got some of the best fans in the world. They’re like the total opposite of those jacka**es in Golden State. Those fans are the worst. Sacramento’s got great fans.” While we may not know the history behind this feud, we know for a fact that the former NBA player praising the Warriors, at some point, will be a rare phenomenon.

Did Charles Barkley take a shot at Adam Silver with his ‘Greedy’ remark?

Any professional relationship that previously existed between Charles Barkley and Adam Silver is currently strained. The situation has persisted ever since TNT, the television network that hosts Barkley’s beloved ‘Inside the NBA’ show, has been unsuccessful in its struggle to retain its media rights. By June, it was announced by the Wall Street Journal that Adam Silver and the NBA are closing in on an 11-year, $76 billion contract that would hand the rights over to ESPN, Amazon, and NBC. While TNT continues to stay in the fight, the former player has given up all hope.

“Honestly, in my heart, I feel that we have lost the package,” said Barkley during an interview with CNBC. “That’s my honest opinion, but I really hope we get a last-minute reprieve for the people at Turner.”

With platforms like Amazon and NBC possessing streaming advantages over TNT, the NBA has indicated what its future looks like. Therefore, the same interview also saw Barkley downplaying the role that streaming will hold in the world of sports, while also allegedly taking a shot at Adam Silver.

“Well, I think that you got greedy players and greedy owners,” Barkley continued. “They don’t really care about anything but how to make the most money possible. We should never put money above the regular fan. Everybody can’t afford streaming. There’s nothing wrong with streaming, but when you start just going to the highest bidder and you’re not on regular television, I think you do a disservice to the fan.”

The former player never named Adam Silver personally in his remarks. However, the current dispute between the NBA and TNT, combined with his ‘greedy owner’ remark, may not have left too much to the imagination.
