Stephen Curry can change the dynamics of a game within minutes. He is a remarkable basketball player who has left a lasting impact on the league. His three-point shooting prowess not only changes how modern basketball is played but also sets him apart in the ranks of the greatest! But despite his greatness, Curry had his fair share of struggles to become the player he is today. Fans might not celebrate his caliber with the likes of LeBron James and Michael Jordan, but his talent mesmerizes many. Even today, standing at 6 feet 3 inches, he has to overcome the leaping abilities of giants to maintain his ground.

The recently released documentary “Underrated” highlights an unseen area of Curry’s personal and basketball life. It showcases his perseverance and success, which he had since a young age. The story provides a closer look at his backstory through the eyes of people close to him.

In the documentary, Stephen Curry found himself on a thin line. Despite worrying about not growing physically to meet professional basketball standards, he remained confident in his skills to make it big time. During his sophomore year, Curry told his father, Dell Curry, that he wanted to play in college. “He’s, you know, probably, at that time, 5’10, 5’11. Skinny. He’s shooting from his waist,” Dell said.

Given the higher competition in college, Dell recommended Steph to alter his releasing point to near his head. He told Curry, “Okay if you wanna go to the next level, you gotta change your shot from your waist. You gotta go up here [gesturing a shooting action near his face].”

Dell then emphasized how crucial and tough it was to develop a totally different set of muscles to change one’s shot and shoot efficiently. Furthermore, Sonya Curry (Steph’s mother) said, “Stephen was all in for the idea of it until Dell took him out in the back, and he had to start shooting.

Steph didn’t take transitioning his shot well. The extra exertion on his muscles and the need for extra strength to purposefully launch a three from the top of the head took a toll on his confidence and endurance. Dell said it was a tough summer for Steph that year. “For probably the first week, he’s just shooting right under the basket. Shot after shot, for hours every day.” When recollecting the memory of that time, Stephen Curry said, “I was lost for a while. For three months, I literally couldn’t shoot outside the paint.”

It is very unusual to learn that the best 3-point shooter of all time struggled to even shoot from anywhere near 15 feet, let alone the 22-foot mark of the three.

Sonya Curry gave Steph an impartial choice

Steph has always been a family person. Ever since childhood, he has had a deep friendship with his parents. Moreover, he candidly expresses himself with his family even now. He confided in his mother during his painful battle to rectify his shot. She said, “He was like, I don’t want to do this. Why do I have to do this? I can’t keep going.”

Being the strong-minded mother she always has been, Sonya told Curry he has a choice like always. “If this is too frustrating for you and you don’t feel that it’s valuable, stop now. Go back to how you’ve been shooting, and let’s move on with this thing.” Knowing what might tick and motivate his son, she added, “But if you are really buying into what your dad has prescribed for you, keep going.”

Post the summer; Curry elevated his game before playing in his Junior year. After watching him play, even Curry’s high school coach was left in amazement. Curry was doing things his coach never projected he could on the court. His shot fundamentals, speed, and ability to create space improved drastically. “There is just an art to what this kid is doing out on the floor, and there is a drive to be the absolute best,” he said while reminiscing on time.
