Not many dare to dream, let alone chase them till their pinnacle of glory. But Cameron Payne is reaping the rewards of hard work, will and consistency. “Now I get to be myself, go out there and be Cam Payne and whatever comes with it is all good. And I love it. I love it,” he said. And when you do what you love and do it your best, it pays well too.
Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Cameron had hit his career’s lowest when he had to walk out of the league despite being a high draft pick. But his faith in himself and support from his family brought him back with a bang.
Yet the current Knicks’ No.1 had his way through the toughest of career setbacks which made him churn out his best performances. “I just wanted to be good every day because my contract wasn’t guaranteed,” Payne once said right before he signed his first biggest contract in 2021.

Payne entered the league as a promising young guard for OKC. But soon he was jumping between teams because of limited opportunities, in-game injuries and even spent a considerable amount of time in the G-league. Only an unshakable faith in one’s own self can lead to such a success story. Recalling the cold days, the NBA-star told 12 News, “I went through the ups and downs, got sent to the G-League, got waived. But I never lost confidence in myself.”
Former teammates and coaches alike have recognized Payne’s unwavering confidence in himself, “You can’t go through what he has been through and not have a level of belief in yourself that no one can touch,” said Payne’s former coach Monty Williams in an interview with 12 News. And Payne justifies his larger-than-life NBA journey as something that he can share with his community.
