When Zion Williamson got drafted first overall six years ago, everyone deemed him the next big superstar. Some even compared him to LeBron James after his highlight dunks at Duke sent social media into a frenzy. Although he has the talent to live up to those expectations, Zion’s health has turned into a major concern and stopped him from achieving superstar status. And with the Pelicans sitting at the bottom of the West standings this season, the hoops community has begun wondering if it’s time to trade ‘Zanos’ and start fresh.
Well, it was less than a week ago that Zion finally returned to action from a two-month hiatus due to a hamstring strain. And just when things began moving on the right track, he got suspended by the Pelicans for tonight’s Sixers clash. The reason? Violating team policies by arriving late for the team flight to Philly on Thursday.
Although the Pels won without Zion, his absence left veteran insider Trevor Lane believing, “Pelicans should seriously look at trading Zion. Wipe the slate clean, get an awesome pick in a stacked draft, and move forward around Murray, Murphy, Missi, Hawkins, Jones, badass draft pick and assets from Zion, CJ, and Ingram trades.”

Yes, it’s been six years and Williamson has not led his team out of the first round even once. And it’s clear that the current roster is not good enough to contend for a title, especially if Zion continues missing games.
Sure enough, even the fans agreed with Lane’s stance and urged the Pelicans to trade Williamson as comments like “100%, any of the top 4 picks would be huge for them,” and “Zion’s super injury prone I wouldn’t want to build around him anyway they could set themselves up like OKC did if they were smart,” began flooding in.

Well, the 2x All-Star still has three more years left on his deal and the Pelicans could get massive trade value for him because a healthy Zion Williamson on the right team could do some serious damage. Surely, contending teams will consider giving up some valuable assets to acquire him. And that would give the Pels pieces to build for the future and restart their title pursuit.
NBA World explores potential Trade options for Zion Williamson but veteran insider believes there is “No Sense” in trading him
With the idea of Zion’s trade now floating, netizens instantly began speculations about potential moves as one wrote, “They should have traded him a while ago. Pelicans should trade him to Toronto for Scottie Barnes or Miami for Jimmy Butler.” Yes, Butler is available after demanding a trade from Miami, but he might not be the right candidate for the Pels. That’s because he is an aging superstar who wants to win now and the New Orleans franchise is nowhere close to winning. Moreover, they need younger stars to be successful in the long term.
Therefore, one netizen proposed, “It wouldn’t happen but how hilarious would Lakers be to get him after they traded AD here.” Well, it has happened once in the past that the Lakers have taken a number one pick from the Pelicans when Anthony Davis moved to LA. And that was a solid exchange as AD helped the Lakers become champions and the Pels got multiple assets for the future. Maybe the two franchises could do something similar with Zion.

But some fans also believe that the Pelicans are not going to part ways with Zion anytime soon as one wrote, “They should, but they won’t.” Even veteran insider Brian Windhorst said it makes “no sense” for the Pels to put the star forward in the trade block. Instead, he believes they want him to be on the court and help them get out of the slump they are in. Of course, Zion is still young and if he can stay healthy, the Pelicans will have no problem keeping him and building around him. So, it’s their call to make.
