One thing the New Orleans Pelicans can say out loud (and they should): “NOT A MOMENT’S PEACE IN THIS HOUSEHOLD!” Surely a 13-42 record wasn’t enough for the last season of the West. Because of course, how could it be? The Basketball Gods enjoy tormenting franchises now and then, having their little share of laughs. After not having Zion Williamson for weeks due to his hamstring injury, there’s a new victim of ill luck. And it is the 20-year-old rookie center Yves Missi.
Just when you think, that the tables will turn for good, it never happens. And despite winning 140-133 against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday, bad news hit the Pelicans squad. The team took to their official X handle to let the fans know:
“Yves Missi has been diagnosed with a right knee hyperextension. The injury occurred during last night’s game against the Kings. An MRI taken last night showed no structural damage. Missi will not compete in tonight’s Rising Stars game at 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco, CA. He will be re-evaluated next week and further updates will be announced following the re-evaluation.”

Cameroonian rookie Yves Missi is facing a tough break, missing the Feb. 14 Rising Stars Game. In his place, Bulls rookie Matas Buzelis will step in. Meanwhile, the Pelicans’ rising star has been making waves. Averaging 8.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 52 games, he dominated in December. His stellar 11.2 points and 10 rebounds that month earned him Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors.
New Orleans Pelicans fans just can’t catch a break. This season already feels like a nightmare, and now another injury update? The heartbreak is real. You can almost hear the sound of die-hard fans’ hopes shattering into pieces.
Yves Missi’s injury report throws fandom into a frenzy as they make odd requests to the Pelicans front office
Right before the NBA All-Star Weekend rolled out, the Pelicans front office and fans came face-to-face with the heartbreak of Yves Missi. Surely, nothing can ever prepare you for such things, especially when the hoopster is performing at the highest level. Therefore, one of the die-hards has an earnest request to the owner Gayle Benson. “Just need to cancel the season if we being honest,” they said. Maybe, this could help, a change of hands could mean a change of luck, who knows?
Someone wrote: “This is a canon event for every pelican.” For Pelicans fans, heartbreak feels like a tradition. Another injury, another setback—it’s almost expected. Yves Missi’s misfortune is just the latest chapter in their endless saga of bad luck. No Zion for weeks (he’s back though!), a rough 13-42 record, and now this? The phrase “canon event” fits too well. It’s as if the Basketball Gods script these moments just to keep New Orleans on edge.
Meanwhile, someone dropped a GIF reaction with the caption: “Pelicans & Mavs medical team this season…” Where is the lie? Nowhere. Even the Dallas Mavericks are struggling with injuries, especially since Luka Doncic left.

“Sell the team.” This is a direct message for the team owners. The fans are failing to deal with such repeated heartbreaks and setbacks. And it’s not even the first time for such mishaps. Season after season, it’s the same story, a stale script, only maybe the characters change (not Zion Williamson though!). It’s like the fandom lives in a constant state of fear wondering who’s next to be sidelined. Yves Missi now, who’s next?

Another fan dropped a comment sympathizing with the 20-year-old rookie. They wrote: “Gutted for him, had a great rookie year so far, chin up @Yves_missi.” It is natural to feel gutted for New Orleans’ new star. Missi has missed only 3 games so far, playing 52 games in his No.21 jersey. Besides, his promising presence on the court had an impact despite the brutal losses the Pelicans experienced so far.
Thus, it seems only natural and normal for the supporters to feel ‘under the weather’ with another promising star sidelined with injury. Now, a tough wait of two until the front office drops updates on Missi’s reports. When will he return to the court? This is a question to keep the fans awake throughout the night.
