The officiating during NBA games has come under severe scrutiny in recent years. And an incident with Luka Doncic during tonight’s Lakers vs. Warriors game just gave us another example of how bad it really is. In fact, it’s gotten to a point that even NBA legends won’t put up with it anymore.
With a couple of minutes left in the first quarter, Luka drove into the lane to put up a floater. But he was thwarted, illegally, by the duo of Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski. But guess what happened next? Nothing!
The refs didn’t make a call against the Dubs’ stars despite vehement protests from Doncic. And Luka’s coach chose not to challenge the no-call either.

But NBA legend, Reggie Miller, who was commentating for TNT, called out the ref’s decision. He said it was an obvious foul. And a look at the replay shows that Luka was fouled by the Warriors. But Miller having to point out such an obvious foul just makes things that much worse.
After all, Reggie having to do the official’s job for them is not something anyone wants. Especially when he has been hard on Luka in the past. And fans online did not miss the fact that the spotty officiating turned Reggie into the voice of reason when it came to the no-call on Doncic. But look, this isn’t just about one missed call on Luka. The refs messing up is starting to feel like a season-long theme at this point. And it’s not just fans who are fed up—NBA players are speaking out too.
Luka’s situation is especially frustrating when you look at the numbers. He’s averaging 7.8 free throw attempts per game this season, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander—a guy with a similar playstyle—gets 9.0 trips to the line, per Statmuse. Luka’s constantly getting hacked in the paint, but for some reason, the whistle doesn’t always come. If you’re watching these games, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
What’s your perspective on:
Is the NBA's officiating crisis overshadowing the talent and skill of players like Luka Doncic?
Have an interesting take?
And DeMar DeRozan? He’s so fed up with the officiating that he literally put his paycheck on the line to say something about it. After an early March loss to the Nuggets, he didn’t hold back: “The refs were terrible. Terrible as s—. It’s as simple as that.” When a veteran like DeRozan, who’s been in the league for 16 years, is this heated and willing to risk a $25,000 fine to speak his mind, that says a lot.
And it’s not just him—even Stephen Curry thinks something needs to change. He’s suggested the NBA should make referee grading public so everyone can see if officials are actually being held accountable. Think about that! One of the most respected players in the game is basically saying, “Yeah, maybe we should check the refs’ work, because this ain’t it.”
At this point, it’s not about one bad whistle or even one bad game—it’s a league-wide problem. Players are frustrated, coaches are confused, and fans? They’ve had enough. And after yet another blown call on Luka, they made sure to let everyone know. Here are some of the best reactions we found online.
Fans react to obvious foul on Luka Doncic that went uncalled
Like we said earlier, it was surprising to see Reggie be on Luka and the Lakers’ side for once. “Yk the officiating bad when reggie miller supporting the lakers on non-calls,” wrote an X user.
Another shared a similar sentiment, saying, “Luka Doncic clearly fouled on the shot, should be going to the line. Even Reggie Miller said it was obvious😂😂.” And their surprise is to be expected! The foul on Luka was quite obvious to everyone except the officials overseeing the game.

The lack of a call was so upsetting to fans of the Purple and Gold that they questioned whether the officials were being objective in this game. “Refs have been UNSTOPPABLE for the Warriors,” wrote a member of the community.
“Stg half the refs in the NBA just hate Luka,” said another. And even though we know that it’s just a case of a ref making a mistake, we can understand why they’d feel this way, given how obvious the foul looked on the broadcast. Moreover, this isn’t the first time that refs have missed the call for a foul on Luka Doncic.
But one thing that confused everyone was JJ Redick’s decision not to challenge the non-call. “idk why jj didnt challenge that,” wrote a netizen on X. But another was a little less calm in expressing their displeasure and confusion. “jj sitting there with his hands in his hips instead of challenging the easiest call ever oh my fu—-g god dude,” they wrote on X.

And it is quite perplexing. It’s likely the decision would’ve gone the Lakers’ way had JJ made the challenge. But since he didn’t, the Warriors got away with it scot-free. And we can get why that would frustrate Lakers fans.
But Redick is not the problem. The officials simply need to do better. The calls against the shoddy officiating in the NBA have been growing. And incidents like these don’t help the situation in the slightest. Let’s just hope that the referees can do better in the post-season!
