“They’re going to be doing this again,” an enthusiastic Adam Silver said after Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu’s special 3-point contest– an unexpected NBA vs. WNBA crossover. The sharpshooter took home the final crown, but the Liberty star gave tough competition. And fans thoroughly loved it and were eager for a repeat. As the middle of the week approaches, excitement fills the air, with the community eagerly keeping an eye on updates about the contest. Now, the wait is over as the verdict is in. Brace yourself before that as it’s sure to break your heart.

ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news, stating, “NBA-WNBA shootout with Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu is off. NBA’s Mike Bass: ‘We weren’t able to land on a plan we thought would raise the bar off of last year’s special moment. We all agreed not to proceed and will instead keep the focus on All-Star Sunday’s new format.'”

Last year, the contest got a lot of love and had the massive viewership it deserved. After all, it was the first time a clash between the two leagues had happened. And they were hoping for the same excitement this time. But both Curry and Sabrina reportedly declined to participate, according to Joe Vardon and Anthony Slater of The Athletic. Instead, they suggested two names, Klay Thompson and Caitlin Clark, who could receive similar fan love and in order to expand the competition as well. However, it’s the Indiana star who refused the offer. Last month, her sports agency issued a statement expressing her feelings about the refusal. Clark stated that she wanted “her first 3-point contest to be at the WNBA All-Star in Indianapolis this summer.”

And that, in a way, ruined it for the fans. It’s no secret that Clark has an enormous fanbase, something that was clear from the moment she entered the WNBA and helped elevate its viewership to new heights. This would have been a groundbreaking opportunity for Clark to showcase her skills against Klay, further promoting the women’s league. Fans are definitely upset, as they had been looking forward to another Curry vs Sabrina contest, or at the very least, Klay vs Clark. But none of that is happening because of Clark’s turning down the offer. While the special contest may be missing, there’s still something to cheer up the fans– a reunion.
