Are the Bucks squandering Giannis's prime years with their lackluster performance?

“We won 1 championship, but I believe that we can win a second. I’m going to try my best.” Despite initially having doubts about re-signing with the Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo had a clear focus as he inked a contract extension in the summer of 2023. But things haven’t gone his way since then. Yes, they got knocked out in the first round last year. Now, they’ve started this season with 3 losses in 4 games. This has led to The Greek Freak reportedly questioning his future in Milwaukee once again.

As per veteran insider Bill Reiter, “There is a rising sense of confidence that if things go bad in Milwaukee, Giannis could be available for trade.” Although Giannis has 4 years left on his deal, he could force himself out, if they fail to contend for a title this season. But where will he go? Reiter revealed, “Giannis has already let some people know that places that he is eyeing are Miami and New York.”

“I’m also told that Doc Rivers has really expanded his reach in terms of his influence, taking over a lot of decision-making from that front office. One source of an Eastern Conference rival team described it as ‘a mess,'” Bill Reiter continued.

It was only last year that the Heat were pursuing Damian Lillard, but he ended up joining the Bucks instead. And it would be ironic if Giannis now breaks that partnership to take his talents to South Beach. Obviously, the other option is NYC, but NOT the Knicks.

Well, they’re already stacked after recently adding Karl-Anthony Towns. It is the Nets that the 2x MVP has his eyes on as a possible destination. Sure enough, he would have a better chance at contending for a title in Miami because they have several superstars, including Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. Meanwhile, Brooklyn likely does not have the roster to go the distance even with Giannis.

There was also talk about a possible move to the Warriors. However, joining Steve Kerr’s squad seems unlikely because they do not have the financial flexibility to add a superstar like Giannis and even if they do, it would require them to give up a lot of assets.

Have an interesting take?

When Kenny Smith suggested that the Bay Area side likely needed just one superstar to become champions again, Hall of Famer Charles Barkley shut down any possibility of that star being Giannis on Inside The NBA.

“Like what guy? Anthony Davis? Giannis? Even if you get a superstar, they have to give up on a lot.”

But in either scenario, this is concerning for the Bucks because Bill Reiter remarked the trade could happen even before the season ends if they continue their terrible form! Moreover, Giannis Antetokounmpo has hinted at leaving before.

Giannis Antetokounmpo aims to “create new memories” even if that requires leaving the Bucks

As much love as Giannis has received in Milwaukee over the years, the hooper made his priorities clear last summer. “At the end of the day, I am a winner. I want to be a winner. Contracts, fame, status, comfort zone does not matter to me. What matters at the end of the day is that thing right there,” pointing at the Larry O’Brien trophy. Even though he’s lifted it once, he does not wish to reminisce over the same story his entire career. “I’m tired of hearing the same story over and over again… I want to create new memories.”

Obviously, he was referring to the story of his maiden title run three years ago. But the Greek hooper believes it’s time to write another story, which will only be possible if he wins a second championship. “As long as we are in for a championship, as long as nobody’s comfortable, as long as everybody’s sacrificing the same amount of time and sweat and blood that I’ve sacrificed for this city to win a championship, we are all good. The moment I feel like people are complacent… No way, no way.”

Well, Giannis Antetokounmpo is playing his part so far, averaging 28.8 points. However, the Milwaukee Bucks are having a tough time getting wins and that could lead to them losing their biggest superstar to a rival team.
