Not many expected the Milwaukee Bucks to fire head coach Adrian Griffin while they were 2nd in the Eastern Conference standings. However, the Bucks’ front office booted Griffin on Tuesday after only 43 games and shocked the NBA World. A lot of questions were being raised about why the Bucks decided to let go of Griffin when Giannis Antetokounmpo and Co. were having a successful season.

One day after Adrian Griffin’s shocking dismissal, Bucks general manager Jon Horst justified the move in his opening statement during a press conference.

Bucks GM Jon Horst addressed the media with a long justification for firing head coach Adrian Griffin. “The dynamic of the team has changed. The team itself had changed from when we hired him (Adrian Griffin), and we felt we had an opportunity to improve and get better.” The Bucks GM said. The Bucks hired Griffin before the start of this season after they let go of Mike Budenholzer.

Milwaukee made several big moves apart from replacing their head coach, including the blockbuster signing of Damian Lillard. Jon Horst claimed the Bucks have a special team that has the potential to achieve great things. And the Bucks front office wanted to capitalize on that opportunity by making a leadership change. The Bucks’ GM took responsibility for making the right moves to improve the Bucks’ roster while the players and the coaches did their job on the floor.

Adrian Griffin is not the first head coach the Milwaukee Bucks have fired to improve their chances of winning a Championship.

No one is safe in Milwaukee

Although Adrian Griffin’s firing shocked everyone, it should not be as surprising considering the Bucks’ history. They fired their last head coach, Mike Budenholzer, last summer despite him leading them to a championship in 2021. He also won the Coach of the Year trophy in 2019. Milwaukee let go of Budenholzer as soon as they got eliminated by the 8th-seeded Miami Heat in last year’s playoffs. It is firings like these that remind everyone of the brutality of the NBA business.

No one is safe in this league, and teams will do anything to get closer to a title.

The Milwaukee Bucks also need to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo happy as he has yet to re-sign a contract extension with them. The Greek Freak is in the 3rd year of his 5-year $228.2 million contract. He has declined the player option for the 2025-26 season, and the Bucks are under threat of losing their superstar. That might also be one of the underlying reasons for the Bucks firing Adrian Griffin, as Giannis had reportedly lost faith in the first-year head coach.
