Facundo Campazzo thrived in Spain but flopped in the NBA—Is the league too tough for international stars?

As a longtime Warrior, Draymond Green is aware of the fact how lethal Steph Curry is when it comes to scoring. Green is one of the players who has assisted Steph the most. Not only that but having the responsibility to initiate the offense, the veteran has enough of an idea of when and how the Splash Brother explodes in phases. And while most players wouldn’t warn their opponents about their teammates, Dray isn’t the same type. Such was the case when the GSW faced the Nuggets who were playing without their star guard.

When the Nuggets were missing Jamal Murray, the franchise looked for an international talent. Luckily for them, they got their hands on Facundo Campazzo. The Argentinian is a 2x Euro League winner and a reliable point guard. Though when he and the Nuggets met the Warriors, his encounter with Draymond was memorable, not because of any physicality of the defensive end, but his trash talk!

Facundo Campazzo recalls Green saying via BasketNews, “No matter how you defend him, Curry is going to score 30 points. So, ask to be subbed out and have someone else defend him.” Now, for the most part, Campazzo was a tough defender. Although he’s 5’10, the Argentinian is one of the suffocating players to go up against. But during the 2020-21 season, Steph was on an elite MVP run.

In fact, in the 3 games Steph played against the Nuggets that season, he averaged 40 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 60% from the field and over 50% from deep. This was a defining stat line from Steph that season with Facundo Campazzo guarding him. If anything, it was wise of Green to give him a heads-up before taking the responsibility of guarding the Chef! As for the Argentine, his NBA career didn’t last as long. After two seasons in Denver, Campazzo went on to have a very short stint with the Mavs.

And as the front office would decide, Dallas waived him after just 8 games of action. Nevertheless, Facundo Campazzo had a rather productive tenure in Spain. On the other hand, Draymond Green and GSW are now in a tough spot, anticipating the next season.

Facundo Campazzo got the last laugh on Draymond Green, eventually

While Campazzo went on to have far better years playing for Real Madrid and now feels “at home” in Spain, Draymond Green and the Dubs only faced the worst times. The Warriors lost Jordan Poole, Klay Thompson, and other useful assets season after season. And that’s not even the worst part! The Bay Area has become a low-tier playoff team in the last two postseasons! At this point, all seems to be falling apart for the Stephen Curry-led team. However, the front office tried its best to bring in notable names this offseason.

Have an interesting take?

But apart from Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson, there haven’t been any major newcomers. Of course, the Golden State was desperate to land Lauri Markkanen, but that didn’t work out either. It will be interesting to see if things improve for Draymond Green and the Warriors, as they’ll now look to likely integrate younger talent like Brandin Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga. Besides, considering how far Steph and Green have come, the franchise doesn’t have too long left in its ‘dynasty days’.

What are your thoughts on Draymond Green and Steph’s chemistry? How many assists do you think Green has dished out to Steph? Let us know in the comments.
