The Brooklyn Nets have now entered their rebuild arc yet again. Mikal Bridges, now a New York Knick was the last star of the Nets whom they could construct a team around. They do have Schroder, but they need a solid star at the end of the day. However, it may be in their best interests to base the squad around younger guys and plan the long run. One of their best youngsters who improved drastically this past season seems to be their next major prospect. On the other hand, Cam Thomas is also eligible for an extension this offseason.
In his first two seasons, Thomas was a reliable bench player. But last season, his performance exceeded expectations. Now a starter, Cam averaged 22.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists, while shooting over 44% from the field. He also ranked seventh among the Most Improved Players in the league. Looking at his potential, Thomas can expect a four-year $100 million. And why not? His numbers as well as his potential speak volumes and he would be eligible for such a contract. Thomas is currently on his rookie scale deal.
Now, the Nets can either offer him an extension this summer or wait till the next offseason. Cam Thomas on the other hand hasn’t had the best negotiations with the team. “I haven’t really talked about it much… Whatever happens, happens. All that is gonna come. I’m not really worried about that. If I get minutes and play I feel like I’m one of the best players in the league and I can really showcase myself. But as far as thinking about that right now, Nah, I’m not really focused on that.”, said Thomas per Slater.

Cam Thomas when I asked him if he’s had talks with the Nets about a contract extension:

The Nets are about $11 million under the first apron. While they would exceed the limit if they offered an extension this summer, it would only be worth it. Why? For starters, Thomas will probably have a similar or better year which will increase his value by 2025 offseason. Also, he will become a restricted free agent next summer. Not only will he be worth more but there will be more clubs that will show interest and may lure him, resulting in the Nets losing yet another one of their major prospects.
Cam Thomas could be the next All-Star in Brooklyn
There is no denying how special Thomas has become. The 22-year-old has improved immensely and has shown how valuable he can be to the franchise. That being said, the Nets will have to prioritize keeping him on the roster. For years they have been trying to rebuild and could only go as far as introducing three All-Stars in their starting five. To their credit, they made a great comeback from a franchise that won less than 40 games a season. But then again, the second big three in Brooklyn did not gel so well.

They tried something similar back in 2013, which also didn’t work. looking at the current scenario, they have a chance to construct a core around which they can make changes in the future. Cam Thomas could be a crucial piece to the said core. It will be interesting to see how the Nets look to manage their finances, extending Thomas’ contract. What are your thoughts on the 22-year-old? Do you think the Nets should extend him this summer? Let us know in the comments.
