Can Bronny James handle the pressure of being LeBron's son, or is it too much?

Well, the entire nation was eagerly waiting to see Bronny James make his preseason debut last night. While the rookie did step on the floor, his performance was rather underwhelming. Unable to find his shooting stroke, Bronny scored only one bucket in the entire game and finished with two points. And Daddy James was watching it all transpire from the sidelines. Sure enough, fans were curious to know if the rookie received any feedback from LeBron after his disappointing debut. However, Bronny is keeping it a secret.

When asked if he talked to LeBron after the game, Bronny said, “Yeah, there was some stuff we talked about. I would rather not go into detail.” However, he did reveal that his father’s message was motivational, “But yeah, just support and ‘keep working hard, keep being confident in yourself’ and stuff like that.” Obviously, now that they are teammates, the 22-season veteran is not only Bronny’s dad but also his leader. And they will probably have a lot of private conversations about the rookie’s game and how he can improve, not all of which will see the light of day.

While Bronny did not reveal the details of the conversation, LBJ briefly addressed his son’s two-point performance against the Wolves, “It’s the first game, we’ve had 3 practices in our building, today makes 4. I think for Bronny, for everybody, we want to continue to try to get better and better.” Yes, it will take the Purple and Gold rookie some time to adjust to the NBA, especially because he missed a lot of playing time in college because of the sudden cardiac arrest he suffered. However, there seems to be a pattern here.

He had a similar growth trajectory during the Summer League, as he scored only ten points in the first two games and increased his numbers to 25 points in his final two appearances. Despite his two-point outing, LeBron James was filled with pride to see young Bronny step on the court and begin his journey, “It was great to see Bronny out there, great to see J.J. in the fold, and the rest of the guys as well.” Moreover, the Lakers are gradually building chemistry as Bronny shared key behind-the-scenes details.

Although Bronny is LeBron’s son, the NBA experience is as fresh for him as the rest of the rookies. Especially the locker room dynamic that he is building with his new teammates. And when asked how his camaraderie is with rookie Dalton Knecht and other players off the court, he said, “I mean we, the whole team is kind of just laid back and chill so, we don’t really be doing too much off the court. We just like to chill and hang out, so it’s not much going on.”

Obviously, the focus right now, especially for Bronny and Dalton, is to have a productive rookie season. And the former USC star knew exactly what he needs to do to bounce back from his low-scoring preseason debut, “Just being aggressive on both ends of the floor. But also, just trying to find my comfortability in the new offense and defensive schemes. So, just going out there and playing my best and trying to find my role.” And he will likely get a chance at redemption on Sunday when the Lakers face the Suns.

But even if Bronny is able to turn things around and play at a high level during the preseason, he might not get a permanent spot in the Lakers rotation as a rookie. With Dalton Knecht playing great during the Summer League and scoring 16 points in his debut against the Wolves, he is likely to gain priority over Bronny. Moreover, several stars including Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent are expected to return from injury, making it even more difficult for Bronny to fill the rotation. And JJ Redick has also addressed his plan of developing Bronny’s game in the G League, “I think Bronny is a young guy I’m very high on… as a basketball player. And I said this at his press conference. I said, he’s kind of like our first player that we get to mold and help develop. And so we’re going to look at the G League as a tool in our player development system.” But as long as the rookie is getting playing time in the preseason, he would want to make the most of it.

Do you think LeBron James’ secret feedback will help Bronny find his rhythm in the next game?
