Is the 'We want Bronny!' chant a sign of disrespect towards LeBron and the Lakers?

After establishing a 4-2 record this season, the Lakers again seem to be heading for a loss. Not just against any franchise, but the Pistons! The same Detroit side who had ended as the last seed on the points chart in two consecutive seasons. As a result, a wave of excitement would’ve certainly spread amongst the Pistons’ fans who overpowered the Little Caesars Arena today. After all, there could have been nothing else but a surge of confidence that compelled them to take an unwarranted shot at Bronny James.

By the time a challenge stoppage had been called late in the 3rd quarter, the Pistons had an 8-point lead over their rivals. The Athletic reporter Jovan Buha immediately took to X to reveal how the crowd had begun chanting, “We want Bronny!” After which clips of the same incident, immediately went viral.

While LeBron James had over 30 minutes of game time, his son had yet to get on the court. Since a bulk of Pistons fans made up the crowd, they would not have called upon Bronny to give the Lakers an advantage. Therefore, the question that needs to be asked is: Why are they calling for him?

It is no secret that the 20-year-old continues to struggle in the early stages of his rookie season. In his 3 regular season appearances, Bronny has only averaged 0.7 points, 0.3 rebounds, and 0.7 assists.

His previous appearance, against the Toronto Raptors, was for all but 8 seconds. The last time that Bronny flourished was when going up against the Golden State Warriors in the preseason. While the young gun individually scored a career-high 17 points, the Lakers lost the game by a whopping 58-point margin (132-74)!

Pistons fans may have developed the thought process that Bronny’s presence would have little to no effect on the Lakers’ chances. Therefore, they certainly do not mind him playing. In fact, they were preferring it. Despite their mocking request, Bronny James did not get any game time. This didn’t end up mattering, as the Lakers registered their third loss of the season through a 103-115 score.

Have an interesting take?

With the upcoming matchup against Memphis set to be the last of the Lakers’ five-game road trip, it will be the last chance for Bronny to play before heading to the G-League’s opener. No matter what happens, however, the young star is glad that he at least got the chance to join the main roster. After all, while the Pistons crowd came off as ‘sarcastic’, the same wasn’t true everywhere else.

Bronny James appreciated the warmth he received from the Cleveland crowd!

Cleveland is a city that is close to the hearts of the James family. Having grown up in Akron, Ohio, LeBron James represented the Cavaliers for 11 years (at two different intervals). Along with rooting for The Chosen One, Cleveland fans also often cheered for Bronny, who’d often make an appearance, as a kid, during dad’s games. Therefore, in his first appearance at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse as a professional NBA player, Bronny received love from the local crowd, which he highly appreciated.

“It was insane,” said Bronny after finishing with 2 points, 2 assists, and 1 steal in 5 minutes. “Much more than I anticipated, for sure. But it’s all love. It was insane. It was a nice moment. The chants really got me. I was straight-faced, but I felt it and it felt really good, especially coming from here. Yeah, it was a special moment for me, for sure.”

The crowd isn’t going to be the same everywhere the player goes. After all, if history has taught us anything, it is that fans can often go the extra mile, for competitive gains. Therefore, as long as Bronny ignores the hate and appreciates the love, he will learn to be unfazed by the smallest of things, don’t you think?
