He then proceeded to give an example to support his remarks.

“He had a lob when we were up 12 in the late second quarter. That was, frankly, insane. 5-on-4! He just keep hitting the singles, throw the ball to the open guy. He had the same play last week against Brooklyn. … He cannot be that guy! He can’t foul jump shooters!” Kerr reiterated, making it clear that he wasn’t Brandin’s biggest fan right about now.

That said, it wasn’t all that bad. Kerr made sure to note Podz’s potential as he pointed out, “I love Brandon. He’s a hell of a player. He’s got a hell of a future ahead of him. But I hope he watches this clip right now, of me talking, because he needs to hear it. He’s got to be a smart, tough, great decision-maker.”

These remarks, though, mark a shift in the Dubs coach’s tone. The 59-year-old had been more protective earlier this season. In mid-November, when trade rumors swirled around Brandin Podziemski, Kerr defended his struggles, attributing them to the growing pains of a long NBA season.

“He’s not shooting much confidence right now. … This is part of being in the NBA, you know, an 82-game season. Everybody goes through [such] stretches,” he stated. But if there’s a positive takeaway, it’s how the 2023 19th overall pick is well aware of his shortcomings.

Podziemski shouldered the blame and demonstrated accountability. “I think there was just a point defensively where I was just kind of pressing too much and trying too hard,” he admitted. Moreover, highlighting specific errors, Podz said, “One of the turnovers I had where I threw it to Trayce, I could have bounced it to him earlier. The other one, the Wiggs just kind of slipped out of my hands when I was throwing it.”

He also acknowledged his defensive lapses against Michael Porter Jr. “Definitely not like me and definitely, something I’m not proud of,” Brandin noted.

However, Podz was resolute in his determination to improve. “I know I’m going to be better. … It just sucks [that] we didn’t win,” the youngster said resignedly. It’s clear that Brandin Podziemski is aware of the stakes. But his occasional lapses might still attract attention from teams eyeing his upside.

Trade Possibilities: Could Chicago be the 21-year-old’s next stop?

While several teams could benefit from Podz’s skill set, the Bulls stand out as a likely suitor. With Nikola Vučević on the trade block, the franchise appears eager to bring in younger talent. A promising guard like Brandin Podziemski, with excellent shooting potential and court vision, could complement their lineup while aligning with their long-term goals.

Moreover, the Dubs are a team showing interest in Vucevic. An experienced center like Nikola could be the perfect piece to strengthen their frontcourt. But if the Warriors were to even slip that they were thinking of such a move, there would be plenty of knocking on their door. Particularly, a few who were very interested in Podz during the offseason. The Jazz, for starters, were keen to acquire Brandin during talks of a Lauri Markkanen trade. Brooklyn could also be a potential destination, given their need for young guards who can contribute offensively.

Meanwhile, the Raptors, struggling with consistency in their backcourt, might see Podziemski as a long-term project worth investing in. Interestingly, this comes in the backdrop of the Warriors management assuring the Santa Clara alum of his place in the dynasty after several teams asked for him during the NBA Draft.

In a chat with Anthony Slater in late August, Podziemski revealed what GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. told him. “A lot of these other teams are calling about you. They want you, but you’re not going anywhere. You’re ours.” He also recounted a version with the franchise owner, Joe Lacob, whom he met during a Las Vegas Aces game in the Summer League.

“He told me, ‘You don’t have anything to worry about. You’re a priority here.’,” Brandin shared.
