Is Bradley Beal right to back Dunn over Durant for defense? What's your take?

One of the big three of the Phoenix Suns has spoken. Not only spoken but also backed a rookie over another one of the big guns. If you were Ryan Dunn, you’d be on cloud nine! The 28th pick of the 2024 NBA draft has been lighting it up in the pre-season. Along with Oso Ighodaro, Mat Ishbia’s side has rookies on their roster for the first time since 2020.

Ever since the departure of Mikal Bridges, the Suns have struggled defensively. They were handed a first-round exit by the Minnesota Timberwolves last season, while they posted the worst defensive rating in the playoffs and surrendered the most points via turnovers. Now, with Ryan Dunn on the roster, their defensive depth has increased significantly.

“We uplift him. We encourage him. And we throw him in the fire too. He’s gonna guard their best player probably 10 times out of 10. So you accept that challenge… that’s how he’s gonna get paid to be around this league for a long time. So, I’m happy for him,” said Bradley Beal, as the team is impressed with Ryan Dunn’s performance in the preseason.

Beal’s comments have surfaced, even though the team possesses Kevin Durant who has blocked 43.3% of all shots, he has contested. Standing at 6’ 8’’ with a wingspan of 7’ 1’’, Ryan Dunn frustrates larger players and shuts down passing lanes when he doubles them in the post. He switches effortlessly and can defend guards, wings, and even undersized centers.

While his offense is improving, his elite defense is what could gain him minutes in the biggest hoops league.

In today’s NBA world, teams strongly prefer having non-shooters in the frontcourt, as perimeter players are now expected to space the floor with reliable shooting. If you’re an elite defender, you’re exempt from this rule. Ryan Dunn’s defensive impact at the collegiate level was impressive. He blocked 77 shots and had 44 steals! His defensive versatility and disruptiveness bring another dimension to the table, allowing him to guard up to four positions.

In his debut game, fans noticed the forward’s keen sense of when to capitalize on defense. A similar situation occurred in their game against the Detroit Pistons, where he matched up against star guard Cade Cunningham several times. So, what’s his weakness?

Ryan Dunn only lacks 3’s to become a complete ‘3 and D’ player

The rookie only attempted 12 threes during his 2 years with Virginia. With Mike Budenholzer as coach, if you cannot take threes, you cannot be on the team. Recently we have seen Ryan Dunn shooting 45.5% on 5.5 attempts in just 2 preseason games. This means he has been training effectively to be a perimeter threat as well.

I see fearlessness. Taking the shots with 100% confidence, playing defense aggressively, not flinching. So that’s huge, especially as a rookie.” said Tyus Jones, a teammate of Dunn. If he could get the three down, then who knows what heights the hooper could reach!

Despite his recent success, questions remain about Ryan Dunn’s long-term shooting consistency, especially as he moves from college to the NBA. As the preseason continues, he needs to sustain his confidence and shooting efficiency. “Their whole philosophy is let it go, let it fly every time,” Dunn revealed about the Suns. “If you’re open and have a good shot, let it go.”

Consistent performances will help Ryan secure his spot in the Suns’ rotation, especially with the team seeking strong contributions from younger players, to inch towards a ring before the Phoenix side’s financial restrictions actually start affecting their roster depth and financial well-being. For the next season itself, the Suns will be paying $128 million in salaries, in addition to more than $150 million solely assigned to their big 3!

Ryan Dunn will likely compete most with Josh Okogie, who fills a similar role, for playing time. Thoughts?
