The imminent sale of the Boston Celtics could be around the corner. By January 23, the Boston Glove reported the first round of the bidding process came to an end. The franchise has attracted some high-profile suitors. The rumors suggest at least four bids have been made on a sale projected to be over $6 billion. Likewise, it was the talk of the town during the premiere of the ‘Celtics City’ documentary. Wyc Grousbeck, the current majority owner was also present. But surprisingly, he remained mysterious about any update.

Upon the reporter asking for some information, Grousbeck was a man of few words. “It’s all playing out now,” he said about the sale process. The only thing he did mention is his willingness to stay with the franchise for a few years after the sale to help with the transition in ownership.

“But the general idea is we’re gonna have a good period of staying in, and then transitioning, and trying to do the best thing for the Celtics. We think that might be the right way,” Grousbeck told Bobby Manning.

For those unaware, the Celtics’ sale process will be unique and unprecedented. The Grousbeck family will initially only sell 51% of their stake. Wyc Grousbeck will retain his position as the governor of the franchise until 2028. After that point, the remainder 49% will be transferred over to whoever the new owners are.

According to the Boston Globe, among the leading suitors are some current minority owners within the Celtics. It includes co-owner Steve Pagliuca who has previously forwarded his intentions to be the next at the helm. Furthermore, Robert Hale, another minority stakeholder is also among those interested in purchasing the Celtics.

But till the sale process is over, which could take months if the bidding goes to a second round, Wyc Grousbeck remains an avid fan and ambitious owner. And all he wants to see is the championship parade all over again.

What’s your perspective on:

Will new ownership bring the Celtics closer to another championship, or disrupt their winning momentum?

Wyc Grousbeck is excited about the Celtics’ chances this season

Assuming their place as the defending champions, the Boston Celtics began the season in dominant fashion. They held a top seed, (they still do) and seemed invincible. However, between December and January, they hit some troubles. The Celtics couldn’t generate any winning rhythm. And although a record of 18-12, by their standards they weren’t hitting the mark.

That’s changed in February.

The Celtics have lost just once this month and seem rejuvenated. And Grousbeck is thrilled by their recovery. After seeing his childhood team lift the championship and enjoy a fruitful parade, the Celtics owner has set the vision for the Shamrocks. He wants to see them go back-to-back.

“Now we’re trying to repeat. We’re trying to bring that energy into it. And I think the team has won nine out so ten. So we’re really back on top of the game that we can play and we love being in the mix. We like not knowing what’s going to happen but we like having legitimate hopes that we can go all the way. It’s a great feeling,” he told Manning.

It’s still far away from the championship, but the Celtics are steaming at the moment. They’ve begun outplaying their opponents once again. Over their last four games, they have beaten each of their rivals by double-digits. With one last stretch of the regular season remaining, they are treading down the right track.

And if it continues as is, the Shamrocks do seem destined for another deep postseason run.
