Boston Celtics “Interested” in One of Damian Lillard Trade Casualties but They Have a $466,700,300 Problem

Boston Celtics remain, to this day, one of the best teams in the world of NBA. The current popularity is the Tatum-Brown partnership. Jayson Tatum, a four-time NBA All-Star, won the MVP award in the 2022 NBA Eastern Conference Finals. Jaylen Brown is not behind in the achievement division. A two-time NBA All-Star, Brown and the Celtics just signed a five-year contract – the richest in NBA history.

The recent Lillard trade got the Celtics interested in getting a player themselves. But there is this tiny issue of finances that the team has to consider. Another aspect is finding a player to trade with Portland. So, what exactly does the Celtics have in mind?

Boston Celtics plans to acquire a new player

The Celtics aren’t looking to simply get a new player; they’re looking for a point guard. In the wake of trading Smart to the Grizzlies which got them Porziņģis, Brogdon’s position questionable due to health concerns, the Celtics looking for an even trade is perhaps smart. The player they are looking to acquire is none other than Jrue Holiday.

Keith Smith, a writer for Sportrac, reveals Boston’s interest in Jrue Holiday in his tweet.

“I know they’re interested,” Smith said. “The hard part is making the math work for salary-matching. And finding a third team to take the players Portland doesn’t want. I don’t expect it, but I didn’t expect Dame to go to the Bucks either.”

The problem the Celtics face is the joint contract of Brown and Tatum. The former just signed a five-year $304 million supermax contract extension with the Celtics. The latter signed the rookie scale max extension in the 2020 offseason worth $163 million and is expected to sign a five-year $318 million deal next offseason. The combined contracts of Tatum and Brown together make $466,700,300. The need for math is understandable.

What Jrue Holiday brings to the Boston Celtics

Holiday was part of the three-team trade that sent Lillard to the Bucks. The Blazers are looking to engage in trade deals with Holiday at the forefront. The five-time All-Defensive selection will bring great relief to the Celtics and undoubtedly fill the space Marcus Smart left.
