LeBron and Lance: From rivals to allies—does this show true sportsmanship or just good PR?

Picture this. It’s the East Finals and a young Pacers squad is hosting the Big Three of Miami Heat for Game 5. Well, the game has been neck and neck all night and the home team is doing everything they can to keep the series alive. And that’s when Lance Stephenson uses an unusual tactic to get under LeBron James’ skin as he blows into the then Heat star’s ear. That’s exactly what happened ten years ago and believe it or not, the strategy worked as LBJ had only 7 points that night and the Pacers ended up winning. Sure enough, this is just one of the many incidents that have made the LeBron vs. Lance rivalry one of the most entertaining, if not the biggest in league history.

However, LeBron seems to have buried the hatchet since then and put an end to his 12-year-long beef with Lance. And it showed in his actions tonight as the Lakers star shared the video of Stephenson’s new “On The Radar” freestyle rap on his Instagram story writing, “Go Crazy Born Ready!!!” Yes, with Lance playing his most recent NBA game two years ago, he has now ventured into a new career as a rapper and musician.

And LBJ has shown complete support to his former rival. A rivalry that dates back to 2012 when LeBron’s Heat faced Lance’s Pacers in the playoffs. During Game 3 of the East Semis, King James missed a shot from the charity stripes in the third quarter and Lance, who was on the bench at the time, taunted the four-time champion with a choke sign. Moreover, the Heat ended up getting blown out during that game. Throughout his career, Stephenson played the role of an agitator and it usually worked in his favor, which is evident from the two playoff wins he got over LeBron by using taunts and unique antics.

With LeBron promoting Stephenson’s new music on his Instagram story to his 159 million followers, it sure looks like there is no longer a beef between them. Moreover, they were briefly teammates for one season in LA and that helped them get over their rivalry and develop a bond. However, their wild interactions in the past will always remain etched in history because of how entertaining and bizarre they were. Especially Stephenson’s blow to LeBron’s ear and King James’ nonchalant reaction which even turned into a meme.

And Stephenson revealed in an interview that the unique tactic only came out because of how tough LeBron is to guard. “I didn’t have it prepared. It was all in the flow of the game. Being out there, competing. Everybody in the league is competitive and wants that one thing; to win the game. Sometimes you do whatever it takes to win the game. That guy is a tough guy to guard, so you got to bring your all, and that’s what I did.” He said. Surprisingly, he didn’t even realize that his subtle moment would become such a big talking point for years, “I didn’t expect it to be shown. I didn’t think it was going to be captured. They caught that right in the act of it. That was crazy.”
