After a rat race to acquire the draft rights to the generational talent that is Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs struck gold this offseason. The French phenom has now joined one of the most successful dynasties in the league, boasting of 4 championships. Victor Wembanyama has generated unparalleled buzz around his debut in the Spurs uniform. While his 2023 Summer League performance had a lot to do with this hype, his partnership with his new coach, Gregg Popovich seemed fascinating.

The legendary coach will return for his 28th season as the head coach of the Spurs, holding the record as the longest tenured coach in the league. However, before he takes on his newest disciple, Spurs legend Tony Parker shed light on his experience with the 74-year-old.

“Gregg Popovich was really hard on me,” said the 6-time All-Star in his Hall of Fame speech. “He cursed a lot and said other crazy things. During my rookie season, I sometimes had tears in my eyes in the shower after practice. It sometimes bordered on abuse with me… There’s no denying it.”

When asked about Popovich’s attitude, Wembanyama had a clear answer: “I’ve had coaches who didn’t always tell me the truth and I hated that. I’m confident that when I get the chance to be coached by coach Popovich, he doesn’t lie to his players, he tells the truth. Sometimes it’s harsh, it’s hard, but this is what I want.”
