Equity billionaire Bill Chisholm survived two rounds of bidding before finally claiming the most successful NBA franchise in the league’s history. The Celtics‘ sale process ended with Wyc Grousbeck naming him as a successor. However, as elated as he is, the job isn’t easy. The team is at its peak and, as an owner, there are several key decisions that have to be made. Chisholm has never done it before. So is he ready to handle the pressure?

Luckily, his story is just like Grousbeck’s. The one reason the former majority grew up as a Boston resident and a fan of the Shamrocks. Chisholm is also from New England. “Honestly it’s been emotional for me,” he said about becoming the new owner of the Celtics. But aside from being a fan of the franchise, Chisholm promised its loyal fanbase that he would do what it takes to keep the Cs tradition alive.

“Just really special and emotional. I understand what this is about and what it means to the people of Boston cause I’m one of them, and I’m gonna do it right,” Chisholm said while attending the game between the Celtics and the Sacramento Kings.

He was joined by his wife, Kimberly Chisholm, at the game too. She exuded delight at having such a great opportunity as well. And in doing so may also have confirmed the future for Joe Mazzulla, a man she admits to being “obsessed” with.

“I said, ‘At some point, Bill, you need to tell Joe that I’m obsessed with him.’ But I am because he has done such an incredible job and he has such an intensity. You know honestly, he is very funny, and he has a way of interfacing and always waiting for what’s going to come next. But he’s just an incredible visionary, really. And we love Brad Stevens as a coach… Big shoes to fill but we’re really really happy to get to know him better,” she said about Mazzulla.

And so it seems certain. They think Mazzulla is undoubtedly the right man to lead the next era of the Celtics under their leadership. Additionally, Bill Chisholm will pull out all the stops to keep the Celtics great. But how far can he go?

The tough situation that awaits Bill Chisholm

Throughout the process of the Celtics’ ownership battle, there was always one major concern for the owners. The team that won a title last season is an expensive unit to keep together. Aside from the $6.1 billion Chisholm has shed to own the team, without changes, keeping the roster together will require another half a billion dollars.

“Luxury taxes be damned,” is how Steve Pagliuca, a prospective owner, looked at the situation. But Bill Chisholm promises to do the right things. That doesn’t necessarily entail keeping the roster together and fielding an exorbitant tax bill. It comes with making the tough decisions to find the right balance.

It may have been how every new owner would have seen the situation. Shedding large amounts of money in the very first season wouldn’t be wise. Ultimately, aside from competing, making the team profitable is also a priority for owners. And so, it might come with some tough goodbyes.

It could include tough decisions over veterans such as Jrue Holiday and Al Horford. But what may not change is the tandem of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Barring them, every player’s position within the team could be at risk. It’s an unpleasant situation to be in as a first-year owner.

But it also has to be done. Doing the right things for the team includes making uncomfortable decisions that concern the future of the team. Chisholm just needs to make sure the sacrifices don’t destroy the Celtics’ ability to compete for titles after they reached such a high under Mazzulla last season.

It’s an extremely tough job for the new billionaire owner. However, he is willing to take it on and continue making his childhood team great.
