Is Mitchell Robinson's cryptic post a sign of deeper issues within the Knicks' locker room?

Mitchell Robinson isn’t new to the social media meltdown. The New York Knicks center often takes to his IG stories and other platforms to express his thoughts to the NBA world. And, in the last few days, the 7-foot big man has been constantly at it. Unfortunately, it’s because of a supposedly prolonged injury break. However, things took a turn a turn when Robinson dropped a cryptic post hours after Shams Charania reported his injury update.

It’s a well-known fact that Robinson hadn’t had an easy run in his NBA career, dealing with injuries almost every season. In his 6-season career, he has missed more than half the season twice. And, it’s about to become thrice following the latest update. According to star NBA Insider Charania, Robinson “will be out the remainder of this calendar year” and possibly return in January 2024. Even though The Athletic made a similar update a few weeks ago, Charania solidified it with his words.

Moments after the painful update, Mitchell Robinson took to his IG stories and dropped a quote. It wasn’t his usual positive motivational quote but about betrayal in friendship. The title of the quote read “Never Re-friend” and it ended with, “A snake only sheds its skin to become a bigger snake.” There isn’t any clarity on the person the big man was referring to, but he surely seems to be hurt.

Unlike the latest story, Mitchell Robinson had a different approach to his initial injury update. It seemed more like the big man was raring to get back on the court. The message of his IG story read“I really be in That weight room 1% better every day.” Nevertheless, the only question is, will the Knicks wait until he returns to the court?

Will the Knicks waive Mitchell Robinson’s contract?

Looking at the current roster, Karl-Anthony Towns will most likely replace Robinson as the Knicks’ starting center. Meanwhile, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby should take care of the frontcourt as numbers 3 and 4. Above all, Precious Achiuwa has comfortably suited himself as the backup center. Notably, he dropped 15 points and 5 rebounds in the second preseason game against the Hornets. So, this equation has ultimately raised a few eyebrows on Robinson’s future with the franchise.

However, Shams Charania’s latest update also had positive news for the big man. In his statement, the Insider said, “They’re (Knicks) hopeful he’s gonna be back, and Tom Thibodeau loves Mitchell Robinson defensively. Having him at the five, Karl-Anthony Towns at the four is something you should be happy about.”

So, it’s clear that head coach Thibs isn’t completely settled with Kat as a starting center. Well, we can’t blame him. In the latest outing, Towns attempted 7 shots from beyond the arc. So, the NY side might look to juggle with their available center option until Robinson returns and appoints him as a pure defensive center from January. In the meantime, will this affect the NY side’s defense? Let us know in the comments.
