The Golden State Warriors are on the verge of a landslide collapse. After the exit of Klay Thompson this summer, the Dubs may have yet another setback. And it could be the powerhouse of the team, Stephen Curry, as per the Bay Area veteran, Matt Steinmetz aka Steiny. Apart from Klay’s free agency, the Dubs had another impending decision which is Curry’s contract extension eligibility. While the sharpshooter turned his face against the side, Curry is yet to make his decision, leaving the Dub Nation in cold feat.
However, Steiny feels the superstar would leave the Dubs’ “feet to the fire”. In the latest episode of 95.7 The Game’s Steiny & Guru radio show, the media veteran addressed the gloomy future of the Bay Area side. Currently, Steph’s contract runs through the 2025-26 season, following which he will become a free agent. However, this summer, Curry is eligible for a one-year extension worth $62.6 million, which will extend his stay till the 2026-27 season. Importantly, the extension window is open till October 21.
Speaking of Stephen Curry’s pending decision, Steiny said, “If he doesn’t sign an extension by October 21, (Anthony) Slater suggesting and I would agree that would be the first sign that Steph is holding the organization’s feet to the fire.” Moreover, the veteran reasoned Curry’s hesitancy stating that he “could leave early,” depending upon the Warriors’ upcoming performances.

Following this, Steiny put forward an important question to the superstar. He added, “Why would Steph Curry not sign a contract for more money than he’s ever made in his career when he’s 38 years old? To me, it feels illogical why he wouldn’t do that.” The veteran further dropped a two-fold reason behind the hesitancy. He added, “One is cause he can hold the Warriors’ feet to the fire a little bit. The other reason would be, he’s also maybe giving the Warriors a sliver of flexibility because he only got two years left rather than three.”
Will Stephen Curry sign the extension?
If Stephen Curry skips the October 21 deadline and misses the one-year extension, he will be eligible for a two-year extension worth $130 million next summer. However, it will put the Dubs again at the free agency risk. Steph may walk out of the franchise as Klay Thompson did. So, it’s a tricky situation for the San Francisco side.
However, a few back, Stephen Curry himself made a positive statement about his desire to win another championship for the franchise. Especially with the Olympic flurry, Curry may as well pull it off. Speaking to Marc Spears ahead of the Olympics, he said, “I want to win. Let’s put it this way, it’s a longwinded way of saying that if it is a situation where you’re a bottom feeder and it’s just because you want to stay there, I’d have a hard time with that.”

While Steph felt the current roster couldn’t get the team far, Anthony Slater dropped a crucial update. According to Slater’s sources, the Dubs believe that have “improved this summer” after the inclusion of De’Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson, and Buddy Hield. Will this be enough for the Dubs to win the championship? Let us know in the comments below.
