Edrice Femi “Bam” Adebayo was born on July 18, 1997, in Newark, New Jersey, making him American by nationality. While Bam doesn’t have any full siblings, he does have a half-brother, Jabari Ashe, on his father’s side. Though born in New Jersey, Bam didn’t grow up there. After his father returned to Nigeria, Bam and his mother moved to North Carolina, where she worked as a cashier at Acre Station Meat Farm. Marilyn played a pivotal role in his basketball journey, ensuring he had every opportunity to succeed. Recently, Bam honored her support by surprising her with a new home—a dream they had waited 56 years to fulfill.

In an interview with ESPN, he noted, “My mom never had nothing that she could call her own. So growing up and being able to do something different with basketball and be a special player, that was something that I’ve always had in my mind. I’ve always wanted to do. And just having the opportunity to do it for my mom is an incredible experience.”
Not much is known about Bam Adebayo’s father, who passed away in 2020 in Nigeria. Although their conversations were limited, Bam consistently embraced his Nigerian heritage. By age 16, he was already exploring his Nigerian background, showing a deep respect for his father’s roots. This connection even inspired his desire to represent Nigeria at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Have an interesting take?
Interestingly, in 2019, Adebayo initially seemed set to play for Team USA. He earned a spot on the provisional roster for the FIBA World Cup, a notable achievement. With numerous NBA stars opting out, Bam received an invitation to Team USA’s training camp. However, despite his impressive performances with the Heat, he was ultimately cut from the final roster. But the question remains: did Nigeria extend him an invitation?
The Nigerian Basketball Federation, sensing a chance, quickly moved to court him. Adebayo was eligible to play for Nigeria through his father. Their president Musa Kida wanted him on the D’Tigers’ roster for the Olympics. “Having Bam in our national team is a possibility that we are considering as a federation ahead of the 2020 Olympics and beyond. We are excited about how far he has gone and what he can achieve in his career with D’Tigers if he chooses to play for Nigeria.” He said.
The hooper wasn’t late to respond too. He said in early 202, “My dad is Nigerian, so if they asked me, I would consider it.” Nigeria was interested in him, with the 2020 Olympics on the horizon. His incredible rise, including an All-Star selection and strong playoff performances, caught attention. However, he represented Team USA and played in six games, where he averaged 6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists pre-game. He also won gold with the team and also played in the 2024 Olympics, where again he won gold. As now you know about his family and culture, do you know he has a nickname?
