Stephen Curry's emotional story—does this make you respect him even more as a player and person?

Stephen Curry has several motivations in life. He has a complete family to rejuvenate him after bad games and his self-confidence too is a gear for his sanity. However, none might compare to his faith in Christ. Through tough times such as his overlooked run with Davidsons College, his confidence in a power beyond kept his engine running. Eventually, it became so hot, that he forced the French commentators to call him ‘Devil Curry.’

He addressed these comments on the Stephen Colbert Show during his latest appearance. For obvious reasons, he dismissed the devious nickname given to him, alluding to his undivided faith in Christianity. In doing so, he also expanded upon the origins of his faith. It all began with his mother, Sonya telling him to choose a verse he could draw positivity from. And the Philippians 4:13 would serve as a power source for the Chef.

“When I was a freshman in college at Davidson, my college in North Carolina my mom texted me before my first practice. And she gave me a bunch of words of encouragement. Her favorite verse is Romans 8:28. So she’s like you need to pick a verse that you can go to in your times of need and can give you that inspiration. So 4:13 was for me. I still write it on my shoes to this day, every pair of shoes,” he told Colbert.

It runs much deeper than that though. One might have noticed Curry points to the sky every time he makes a three. It’s among his many trademark celebrations. But it might be the only one he shares with his mother, who explained its relevance to being him ‘playing for Christ,’ a message Ayesha Curry reminds him of before every contest. When speaking about it on Raising Fame, she explained the motion.

“Ayesha tells Stephen before he leaves ‘Play for Jesus’ and have fun out there. That’s what she tells him before every game. Stephen and I have a sign where we point to our hearts, touch our hearts, and then point to the sky. And that means play for Jesus. So I do that with all three of, of our kids when they played,” said Sonya Curry.

Interestingly, the Baby Face Assassin isn’t the only one who has devoted himself to Christianity. There is another baller who has the same preference as the sharpshooter.

Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard do more than just shoot long shots

What’s your perspective on:

Stephen Curry's emotional story—does this make you respect him even more as a player and person?

Have an interesting take?

If there is anybody who can mirror Stephen Curry’s circus shots, it’s probably Damian Lillard. The Bucks guard has carved a reputation of being a momentous player, unafraid of the challenge that lies in front. His confidence plays a tremendous role in it, the source of his imagination also lies in the Philippians 4:13 verse.

It was revealed to Sonya Curry and Lucille O’Neal by Dame Dolla’s mother Gina Johnson. When detailing raising Lillard, she spoke about him always having a chip on his shoulder. And the one statement that would infuriate him was if anybody said he wasn’t capable of doing something. In those times, he would look back to the Philippians 4:13 verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

Furthermore, he also has a Bible verse tattoo on his left arm.

Given the Currys’ immense devotion, Stephen Curry and Ayesha also got matching (><) tattoos. It’s a symbol of the Bible verse John 3:30 which they got inked together in 2014.
