With the drop of curtains on the 2024 NBA Finals, a new stage is being unfurled. In it, the drama surrounding the trade window will unfold throughout the summer and the audience is already catching a glimpse of two leading performers of the cast. One is Trae Young and the other, Dejounte Murray.
The vultures of the league have constantly monitored the Atlanta Hawks duo, waiting to pounce at the opportune moment. After pushing aside the month-long wishy-washy HC search, the Lakers have finally stuck to JJ Redick. This means, that now is the time for phase 2; getting the right pieces to play with.
Shams Charania, the Athletic reporter joined the “Pat McAfee Show” on Friday and put the randomness of the market on a clothesline. “That’s why the pressure is on the Lakers front office to make major changes on the roster to an extent,” Shams replied when asked about the thought process of the Lakers front office after JJ Redick’s hiring. He indicated the Gold and Purple brigade would like to take a page out of the Celtics’ playbook. This means having a team on the court with almost 5 two-way threats.

And that is where Dejounte Murray comes in for the Lakers. The LA side’s chase for the Hawks PG in the last trade window is common knowledge and Charania expects it to continue. “One name that they did pursue last season at the trade deadline that I think teams around the league expect to come up again in trade conversations over the next week or so, and makes sense for the Lakers is Dejonte Murray with the Hawks,” Shams told Pat McAfee and his co-hosts.

Despite the vast talent of Dejounte Murray and Trae Young, the two have failed to gel together since the former moved to Atlanta. Both have a similar play style with playmaking being their forte. But there’s only one ball on the court. If one of them has it, what will the other one do?
During an episode of “From the Point by Trae Young,” Murray explained the reason for their unsuccessful pairing by saying, “We’re two point guards. Let’s just make that clear: two point guards.” The Hawks also possess the No. 1 draft pick this year, and it is almost certain that they’ll be drafting Alex Sarr. So a break-up between Trae and Murray is imminent. To smoothen the situation, Trae Young seemingly approved the Lakers’ JJ Redick decision with a simple message on social media.

The news of the Lakers selecting JJ Redick as their next HC spread like wildfire on Thursday. Trae Young was one of the keen observers of the development and left a cryptic message. The All-Star guard posted an emoji of an hourglass which could mean something is brewing under the surface. Is a big summer move coming? Only future can answer that but his post has significance.

Just like Murray, there were heavy links between Trae Young and the Lakers in recent years. He was even tipped as a “star name” to join the franchise in the off-season, according to reports. The Lakers can now shift their gaze back on Young and his addition would be an upgrade over D’Angelo Russell.
Trae Young and the San Antonio Spurs is another story swirling around, so it will be a situation worth keeping an eye on. If Murray goes to the Lakers and Young moves to Texas, the Hawks might end up on the losing side. But given the option to choose between the Lakers and a youthful Spurs side, no one will blame Young if he goes with the first option.
