The surge of illegal streams to watch sporting events online has been an area of concern for sports organizations. By easily bypassing the law and without having to pay the subscription fee, the viewers are contributing to a revenue loss. The NBA, UFC, and NFL have decided to join forces to end it as soon as possible.

The takedown of illegal streams comes under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). As it states that the notices should be processed “expeditiously”, the fans often get to watch a match till the end before the takedown comes into action. The American organizations want that to be changed to “instantaneously or near-instantaneously”.

In a recent letter sent to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), they reportedly mentioned this. They also cited that the delay in takedowns resulted in “losing up to $28 billion,” when calculated in terms of potential annual revenue loss. As  Adam and Dana push hard for the changes to go through, new challenges arise.

So, no one could have foreseen the struggles of today. That’s why the NBA, UFC, and NFL want the law to become effective from this very moment.

This possesses a downside too. The majority of the small businesses, especially those in the clothing line, get affected badly due to the DMCA. So, a change in the act may result in the shutdown of several growing startups due to intellectual property infringement.
